You do understand that this is similar to saying "my family had cable and internet in the trailer park and everyone else in the park considered us to be wealthy".

Funny you should mention high school here and in this regard. Move on, life ain't fair, you get out what you put in and most of all "you can't always get what you want..."

I wonder...how would young people be able to enjoy Mardi Gras-which as a 17 year old you claim whole heartedly to-without Krewe's and the Members that make them possible?

How would parades and the environment they create and are surrounded by be possible without the Members you call out? Where would the thousands of dollars they spend on throws come from so the riders can sling them for all 6 miles of the Endymion Route? Would they come from you? Would we raise a tax to generate the money necessary to pull Mardi Gras off?

You talk about intelligence and you may have just enough of it after 16 or 17 years of age to be dangerous...but you haven't quite ripened on the vine enough from an intelligence perspective for me to say looking at this thread that you're capable of sophisticated thought.

We should be done here, Bro.

Most Elitist thing you will see in this great state of Louisiana is Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is just another excuse for citizens to get piss arse drunk nothing more.

Yes and no. I'm involved with a krewe. We have a ball and parade. It was one of the first that allowed smaller krewe's that had a ball but no parade to showcase their kings and Queens. usually that is forbidden so the Kings and Queens of the group owning the parade won't get upstaged. It is a fund raising event. 100% of the money raised each year goes to group like the Local Boy Scouts, Local Theatre, Young Marines.Etc.
As for our ball it's open to the public. The best seating is reserved for the courts family and guest.
We invite the local Kings and Queens and honor them at our ball (very rare to share the spotlight) One King and Queen is from a group that is 100% Black.
The other a mix. We avaerage 1,200 at the ball each year.
The people that usually are Kings and Queen and Dukes are usually people that make a difference in our community.
However drinking is encouraged.

It worries me when I see people over 30 drinking. Do they just lock their kids in the bathroom at their house while they go get drunk someplace?

Getting them cheap old trinkets they toss off the floats--as a kid, that was like gold to me.

Damn, lighten up, Francis.

I am in my forties and have had multiple "kids" (23-25 yr old children of mine plus friends) leave their drunk puking friends and come hang out with us every year. There is something to be said for chairs/food/decent alcohol/and bathroom passes. maybe we know what we are doing.

Maybe I just need to experience Nola Gras

Report back after experiencing Mardi Gras on the traditional Uptown route on Sunday before Mardi Gras Day (Okeanos/Mid City/Thoth/Bacchus) and Endymion on the Mid City route on Saturday or in the Dome for the Extravaganza.

Also, if you get a chance to ride in either Endymion or one of the bigger uptown parades (I will be riding in Thoth for my third time this year), do it. It may change your whole perspective on Mardi Gras.

Your current view on Mardi Gras (assuming you have only experienced Lafayette's watered down version) is like saying you don't get the appeal of the Eiffel Tower after only seeing the model version in Las Vegas.

I'm going to my first Mardi Gras ball this weekend at 30 years old. I'm kinda excited.

I think wearing a tux is a bit ridiculous but me and the wife will treat it like the prom that we never got to attend together...

so I guess the OP is kinda right

Did my first one two years ago and had a blast. i always thought these things seemed a little silly until I went to one. Had a great time. I don't know what the OPs hang ups about this are.
