absolutely loved it too. as a former drummer that kid was crazy good.
the intensity of that last scene reminded me of the intensity of the opening scene in Inglorious Basterds.

Saw this last night. Really good movie. Spoilers Below.
I'm not sure if I like this or dislike this, but I'm left wondering so much after the movie ends. Did Fletcher sabotage his show strictly for revenge? Or was he just trying to push Andrew even further?
Did his love interest show up to his big show? What happened to all of that?
And then there's just genuine curiosity about what happens to Andrew after the show. Does his career take off? Does he continue killing himself trying to be an amazing musician, or do his priorities change as a result of all he's gone through? Does he start to focus more on family/friends/love interests? Does he come to the realization that Fletcher is a jackass, or grow a stronger relationship with him?

SPOILERZZZZ
The speech Fletcher gives the JVC band right before they take the stage tells you exactly what happens after the movie IMO. Yes, he purposefully sabotaged it.
He played an incredible set and completely stole the show. He showed his skillset at a very high level so you assume he goes on to big things. If he had failed (which he did in the first song that Fletcher set up to make sure he failed) the audience would remember him and he would be done. He realizes that as he's walking offstage and says frick it, I just had cymbal thrown at my head and I'm going to fight back.

Best movie I've seen in a long time.

I think it's pretty clear what happens after the movie fades to black.
He develops a stronger relationship with the teacher/mentor.
He becomes "one of the greats" after his final performance.
Who the frick cares about the girl? He gave her up for his craft and honestly he wouldn't have been in that final scene if she was still in his life. He had to sacrifice her in order to be that good. In a twisted way he was absolutely right.
Could he end up being another suicide victim in the future? Who knows. Perhaps he's been so mindfricked by the teacher that eventually he becomes another suicide victim due to loneliness and fear of failure. Perhaps not. There's no way to know and it really doesn't matter.
The point is that sometimes being the best comes as a incredibly great cost. He sacrificed his sanity, family, and friends to be the best. He became the best...and only his dad and the teacher remained in the aftermath.

This. And I'm one to think Fletcher isn't ALL bad. Just tough. The real question is whether or not Fletcher was in control. Was he genuinely surprised and WAS trying to sabotage Neeman? Or was it all a ploy to get Neeman to be that good in that moment?
It doesn't change the ending, and is a nice "open ending" as I can see it either way.

That dinner table scene cracks me up.
"It's Division III." So well done.

I think it was pretty clear that he was trying to sabotage him, but he just rose to the occasion and that impressed Fletcher so he jumped on board and was like "Okay then, let's do this."

Fletcher had no choice but no get on board, the kid hijacked the set.
Did anyone else get worried during the kids solo after caravan that he was just having a complete mental breakdown.
Glad the movie didnt end like that.
Question I want to know-
Did the kid end up playing as well as Buddy Rich?

We watched it last night. We were blown away. Was awesome.

It is pretty clear to me that he was definitely trying to crush the kid. The thought he had broken him and wanted to crush him further...and the greatness presented itself. He saw it, he recognized it, he went with it.
Also, to me part of the movie's focus is that to achieve one of the most human of goals, greatness, you had to give up your humanity.

I will add my two cents...I thought at the end, I thought Fletcher was saying either you are going to be great or going to get totally out of it.
I don't give a f@ck what it is, but I am not wasting any more time and giving any you a pat on the back/slap on the face, or "good job, good effort".
And when Teller just started crushing it...I thought Fletcher was soaking in the greatness like the rest of us. It was something that he has wanted all of his life from is students.

Exactly. You said it best.

quote:This. When Andrew took over on his solo and Fletcher came over and asked what he was doing that was when Andrew validated everything Fletcher had been trying to do. He had his "thrown symbol" moment. Fletcher didn't just ride with it, he embraced it as his life's goal being accomplished.

The very final scene then the kid finishes the solo and kind of looks at Fletcher like "That was it wasnt it!!?" and the look in Fletchers eyes said "You're GOD damn right it was".
Chills.
Chills.

I was terrified that he was completely just losing it. Me and my girlfriend thought he was literally going to have a heart attack.

very good movie, not great

Question: Why the hell was there NO mention of the car crash after it happened? The accident was very serious and the kid easily could have suffered some serious injuries. Instead, they just glossed over it.
Posted on 3/7/15 at 4:37 pm to Bench McElroy
Because he died in the car wreck. The concert was his dying hallucination - and an ironic jab at Fletcher, who lied about his former student perishing in a car crash.
But seriously, I'm really not sure. And I haven't heard that take anywhere else. Just my tinfoil theory.

It was good but Night Crawler was way better. Jake should have got a nom at leat.
Also Interstellar was the best film of the year.
