Any advice on building bigger ships?

I have a solid rocket I built that can reach mun easily with some fuel left over.

I can't seem to get passed that. My minimus flight was a fluke lol.

If I add more rockets I can't orbit correctly. I'm stuck.

Try Minmus first. It has a lot less gravity than the Mun and it's much easier to get down on and off of using a lot less fuel. It does have more uneven surfaces, though. Watch that.

Do you have nuclear engines? If you are going to other planets you will need nuclear engines. They are like the hybrid engines of space exploration. Really good fuel consumption.

No nuclear yet. I do have big orange tanks. I have a new design that can get into the sun orbit quickly, but I can't ever seem to catch the other planets. That's what I'm working on now.

I also have 2 kerbals each stranded on mun and minimus. One from the landing.... and one from the failed rescue mission

Google "asparagus staging" it's a theoretical rocket staging that really only works in Kerbal Space Program. It's hard to explain, but it makes your initial rocket stage extremely fuel effecient.

You need at least 3 stages to get into a stable orbit in my opinion

If you set up your first stage using asparagus staging you can get into orbit with 2 stages if you run your engines just right.

A helpful hint to save fuel is that to break free of Kerbin's Gravity you only need to be traveling at 100 m/s. This means that once you hit 100 m/s you can start throttling back, any velocity over this is wasted fuel.

Some current gen rockets actually do.

But yeah, KSP slants the equation with transfer occurring with a massless pipe when the real world actually has to add conduits, piping, and pumps.

I think the biggest difference is that in Kerbal fuel transfer is instantaneous

Yeah, there's a new rocket line out, private, that has this type of staging.

Once I learned how to do asparagus in 2 fuel tanks and up, I could go anywhere!

And then asparagus inside asparagus?! Yowza!

Bump. Anyone been playing? I've been out of town the last 9 days and am thinking about firing it up again tonight. Last thing I remember doing was trying to build a Minmus lander after I upgraded a few buildings.

I got a rocket into orbit. Thought I beat the game... is there more?

I was proud of myself. I'm just doing some basic tutorials at the moment trying to learn how everything works. I'll be starting up career mode soon.

Congrats on getting into orbit dude. That's not a small accomplishment at all.

If you are new to the game, I'd do the tutorials then play around in Sandbox for a little bit. Career mode can be pretty challenging especially starting out.

Been playing a little, mostly trying to figure out the new buildings and which ones I need to upgrade first to be able to do the most with the least amount of money, so I've started over several times. It does take a lot more planning for the future now, I ran out of money one time going to the Mun for science and got fricked had lots of science but only about 4k left in the bank

I may be wrong but can't you take out loans somehow? And I was very close to getting screwed over on money early on too. I crashed about 5 rockets without completing any contracts and I didn't revert the flights. That wasn't the smartest move on my part

I have no idea about loans, that would be awesome though. There's just so much more to keep track of now. Why can't I just be like NASA and operate in the red?
Yeah, being able to revert a flight has saved me from some serious heartaches.

My biggest problem is trying to do some of the contracts, the ones where you have to fly by something or test a part under certain conditions. I cannot do any of that shite. Fly to another planet: check. Return from the Sun: check. Test a parachute in the atmosphere: not a chance.
