I overshot the moon by alot. Nowi know how to get out the atmosphere i need to figure out how to control the ship in space.
This game is a stupid amount of fun.

Good job. That's a major accomplishment getting out of the atmosphere for the first time
The next thing you need to do is establish an orbit around the planet Kerbin. For missions where I plan on going to different celestial bodies, I usually get in a stable orbit of around 100,000 meters but as long as you're above 70,000 you should be able to create a stable orbit.
Here's a video on how to get into a stable orbit (This guy has some mods in his video so don't worry if your game doesn't look exactly like his):

After that, use your maneuver nodes on the map menu to plan burns so you can get encounters with other celestial bodies. Just focus on getting into orbit right now though.
If you already know how to get into orbit though I apologize for this explanation.

I have no idea how to get into orbit. I just strapped like 100 boosters in 16 separate decouple stages attached to a rocket and fuel tank and a lander engine and fuel tank.
I'll post a pic in a few.
I launch basically straight up and blast out the atmosphere but by then I'm out of fuel in my stabilizer things so I'm screwed and my rocket just drifts forever upward.
I have to learn how to get into orbit without blowing all my stabilizer fuel. Because without it I can't change direction in space. And if I don't use all my stabilizer ability the rocket turns upside down and crashes into the ground

game is fun but hard as hell

Just figured out how to orbit. Have an active satellite now.

Once you make a first attempt at landing on the Mun and watch your rocket get smashed to pieces, you'll be hooked on this game like crack. if you got a Mun encounter you have to burn retrograde to slow down to get into orbit.
The two most important space manuevering items are prograde and retrograde. Those get you to where you want to go and stop you once you get there. The rest of the controls are fine tuning your orbit.

Atta boy! Now you've opened the gateway to the rest of the solar system.

Indiana is right, success in Kerbal is 90% achieving orbit around Kerbol, 8% rocket building and 2% being pointed in the right direction

How did you get orbit

Was it Scott Manley that got to Duna and back on one orange tank?
Posted on 12/24/14 at 1:13 pm to Henry Jones Jr
Probably, I have no idea how he is so fuel efficient. I try my best to conserve fuel, but most times even if I take extra, I end up limping back home and have to do some serious aerobraking to get there.
Posted on 12/24/14 at 1:15 pm to ZacAttack
I think he may have gone to the Jool system on one tank with a nuclear engine. The nuclear engines are efficient as hell.
Posted on 12/24/14 at 1:23 pm to Henry Jones Jr
Those nuclear engines are awesome, but heavy and expensive. I learned how to do Minmus on the first launch from one of his videos. That rocket was insane.
Posted on 12/24/14 at 1:29 pm to ZacAttack
I remember the first time I ever successfully landed on Minmus, I thought it's gravity was two times HIGHER than the mun's gravity. Once I got back to Kerbin from Minmus I had an entire stage of fuel I didn't even use.
Posted on 12/24/14 at 1:39 pm to Henry Jones Jr
To me landing on Minmus and getting back is many times easier than the Mun. I normally try to go there first, a lot more science too.

Same here. Minmus is a world easier to land on and take off from. Even with all of the other celestial bodies, it's still one of my favorites to visit. My only successful colonization is on Minmus. I tried to get a colony going on Ike (Duna's moon) but kept having issues getting in the right orbital trajectory.
I love going to the Jool moons though. Especially Laythe with the view it has of Jool.

any of yall landed on an asteroid yet?
I was able to pull it off, I turned infinite fuel on after and tried to alter the comets orbit to hit kerbin with the ship but couldnt do it

I've never even attempted it honestly.
Scott Manley did a video capturing a big asteroid and landed it on top of the VAB. Because Scott Manley can do just about anything he wants in this game.

Have not tried to land on an asteroid yet. It seems pretty damn hard, I'll stick to landing on things that are many times larger than my ship for now.
