I was having this issue for the longest time too. I looked at the forums and they said you have to get all of the other things on the checklists done then stage into using the parachute, if that makes any sense.

That makes sense. I'll try again when I upgrade to 7 contracts, some of those types of contracts won't cover the cost of launching a rocket. I figure maybe trying 4 or 5 at once will pay off better.

Didn't get into Career Mode tonight but decided that I did want to play for a minute so I started a sandbox mission. Just loaded up one of the stock rockets that comes with the game and took Bob and a few new recruits (since I accidentally "killed" Jeb and Bill a few weeks ago) to the Mun to get the newbies their feet wet. Only problem is I don't have enough fuel to get home. So...... rescue mission with all new recruits next

I haven't played sandbox in a good while. I forgot how much fun it can be even if you're not trying to get funds or science. Thankfully they let you see the descriptions of your experiments now in Sandbox mode instead of putting "Play career mode to see these descriptions" or whatever it was. Anyway, here are Lofurt (left), Bob (middle), and Hudming (right) waiting on their ride back.

I'll post an update on a rescue mission tomorrow sometime.

ETA: After I typed this, I put them all back in the craft then went to the space center menu to recruit new kerbonauts and what do I find? Bill and Jeb are back. Had to recruit a scientist to come along with them though to complete the team to it looks like the legend Jeb will get to rescue the other three.

I have been playing more sandbox then anything lately. That is what always made Kerbal fun for me. The career mode is getting a bit much now and is starting to lose the simplistic fun that I always enjoyed about Kerbal. The constant chasing of something in career though is good because it's another way to keep interest in the game.

I'm starting to feel like this. As much as I enjoy career mode, it had been a really long time since I sat down and actually played sandbox mode. I got the game around Update 0.19.0 which was back in March of 2013 and that's when they had Career mode on the menu but it wasn't playable
Sanbox mode is nice because all it basically is is just building a rocket that's stable enough with enough fuel to get you to where you want to go and back sometimes. The simplicity of it and not having to worry about funds or science is really nice.

But like you said, it is nice to have that sense of progression that career mode provides. But sometimes I just want to be able to visit the Jool system without having to worry about not having enough money or science. I need to find a way to get to Eeloo. That's one of two planets I've never been able to get to. The other is Moho.

My biggest thrill from career mode is building a rocket on a shoestring budget, with less than adequate parts and landing it somewhere that in all reality the rocket should have never made it too.

Same. Oh and Scott Manley released a video of him landing on Gilly (Eve's moon) and returned to Kerbin with maybe one or two tech levels unlocked and no buildings upgraded in career mode. I don't know how he stays interested unless he has mods making it super realistic

Here are the videos of his mission

I bet a paycheck keeps him interested in it.

I really wish they would make EVA suits and kerbals more customizable.

I got it right after Robbaz's first Kerbal video. 2012 sometime I think. Was really into his Skyrim vids at the time and watched that vid and got hooked.

I had enough of little crappy rockets from the early versions of the game. I was so excited when they finally added lander legs.

Rescue Mission Bump

I finally got around to getting the rescue mission done. Everything went almost according to plan except I landed 25 kilometers from the landing site on the moon. I didn't want to waste anymore fuel so I had two of the three stranded Kerbonauts fly over and catch a ride home. I brought home Bob and Lofurt back but decided while I was there that I would leave Hudming behind so he could go out and explore. Next plan is to send a rover up there for the little guy.

I'll upload some pictures of the mission.

I cant even get to orbit. I always run out of fuel.

I have upgraded tech two or three times. I feel like I should be able to get there by now in career

Seems like we are getting a bunch more people playing on TD. We should do a Reddit challenge sort of thing sometime, but just do something simple like a simple Mun rescue trip or something and no restrictions so it's open to all levels. It's always fun to see how different people do things to complete the same task.

Count me in.

What are we thinking? Least number of rockets in career mode to get to the Mun or time or cheapest rocket etc?

Lets not limit it to career mode just yet. Cheapest rocket to the Mun sounds like a good one to start with to me

Lets land for the first challenge. Next challenge we can build one that will get us there and back.

By the way, I was able to get my first space plane into orbit today.

This was the first rocket I built to get it up there but I ended up having to make some alterations to the space plane so the rocket would be more balanced during launch. But this was the basic rocket that I used minus the rocket boosters.

This was the second stage

And finally in orbit. Jeb was pretty excited.

Damn that looks awesome. Have not played with the spaceplanes any.

Just landing sounds good to me for a first challenge. If we start next week we can probably get more people in on it, and I'll be out of town this weekend. We could go say Monday through Wednesday?
