BBC Link with 5 min. video

quote:

Plagued by violence and poverty, the postal code 70805 is considered to be the most dangerous part of Baton Rouge, the capital of the US state of Louisiana.

Or that at least is how outsiders, most of whom only drive past the neighbourhood along either Interstate 110 or the ironically named Scenic Highway, view the community.

Over the course of the month BBC Pop Up spent in Baton Rouge, Benjamin Zand visited the area several times and spoke to many residents.

He asked them what life is really like in the so-called "worst neighbourhood" and what they would like to see change.

Some of the highest homicide and HIV rates in America? Wow.

What's the solution though?

A fleet of remote controlled bulldozers?

Is 70805 as bad as the story makes it seem?

Does anybody here remember when this areas was a predominantly white, blue-collar, neighborhood? It really wasn't that long ago.

Not personally, but my Mom tells me about it all the time. Used to be a blue collar plant worker area.

Yep. My Dad grew up in Istrouma, but "moved away" during WW2. After the war, my Grandfather bought a few acres in the country which today is near the intersection of Glasgow and Hyacinth Avenues. However, 70805 whas primarily blue collar plant workers all the way until the late '70's and early '80's. I remember going with my Dad to Ben Peabody's Esso to buy hunting supplies.

Someone from the BBC spent significant time in that neighborhood?

I'm sure he blended right in with the local indigenous personnel. I'm so glad I get to spend most of my waking hours in that garden spot.

Now give us the same map displaying locations of DWI, inspection sticker and seat belt checkpoints over the same time period and tell me that BRPD has it's priorities in order.

BBC has been doing a few stories on Louisiana recently.

They've done stories on the loss of the Louisiana coast, St. George, voodoo, and the wild pig overpopulation.

Years ago that "community" had a council rep named Pearl George. Ms. George constantly complained about crime in her area, and begged the BRPD to do something about it. Well, the cops go into the area with extra patrols, etc., and made many arrests, which caused crime in the area to drop. Guess who was the first to complain about black harrassment by the police? Pearl George! Her constituents finally realized she was crazy and ran her out of office.
