Is this area really worse than Mall City?

Growing up in BR, Mall City was always the number one place to avoid.

Is Mall City no longer like a war torn 3rd world country?

And what about Gardere at night?

Can you blame people for wanting to move to a safer area? Look at the murder map posted on page 1 and tell me where you would rather live.

It's not the "brown people" that people are fleeing from, it's the crime. That's why white flight isn't always the correct term because there also are plenty of white trash areas with higher crime and lower property values that I wouldn't live in also.

Aka white flight. a-holes can't stomach living near brown people and take off for the nearest suburb in town that's 30 miles away. Then people wonder why traffic is so horrendous going into town in the morning, and out of town in the evening.

I'd like to know where the folks in St. Tammany Parish are going to go now that they're being overrun by trashy white people.

Melrose Place subdivision is actually mostly white, unbelievably. But the Mall City area as a whole is still pretty bad. It's just that, back then, the bad areas weren't nearly as spread out as they are now, so Mall City got a lot of attention.

The only way to fight cancer is to cut it out, to excise it, to remove it.

If you aren't allowed to take care the problem what else is there to do but run?

Does anybody here remember when this areas was a predominantly white, blue-collar, neighborhood? It really wasn't that long ago.
My old man grew up on Evangeline St in the 50s/60s. Said it was pretty decent back then.

I did too. S.St Gerard Circle; Old Brookstown neighborhood. Dad bought a house there in 1956, things were drastically different back then to say the least!

Eden Park was the only place in town I refused to enter after dark when I was younger. The corner of Gus Young Avenue and North 38th Street was the most dangerous intersection in town, and it wasn't because of auto accidents.

I wouldn't say it's the worst, definitely a 'poor' zip code.

No, it still and always will be until all those apartment buildings are torn down.

Gardere's still shitty but crime has fallen quite a bit. The police substation on Burbank and Gardere has really helped the area.

BBC has been doing a few stories on Louisiana recently.

They're traveling the U.S.

The BBC Pop Up team spent the whole of September in Boulder, Colorado, reporting on stories which local people said they wanted to share with a global audience.
Now BBC Pop Up has moved on to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in America's Deep South. The two cities are separated by a great distance - 1,248 miles by road to be precise - but when it comes to politics, culture and racial diversity they are worlds apart.

We'll be holding our first community meeting At Louisiana State University on Tuesday, 7 October. We want to hear what stories you think we should be reporting on.

The EBRSO Gardere Initiative has contributed immensely.

The neighborhood that has me the most confused is Belaire.
I remember when my aunt used to live back there in the early 80's. Was a damn nice neighborhood.

Yeah, my dad lived in Belaire for a little while in the 80s. It's one of the absolute worst now. Lots of murders back there.

Yep, in 20 years, BBC will be doing this same story on the Park Forest/Monticello area.
When my neighbor's kids in Monticello started getting bussed to Scotlandville Middle School and Glen Oaks HS, the houses quickly went up for sale and people moved to Shenandoah, Denham, and Ascension.

I drive around and go to places in 70805 and surrounding areas relatively often for work during the day. While I do see a lot of people just walking around or hanging out, I don't really feel un-safe.

Won't catch me there after dark or not inside my car though.

What hurts my heart are those babies I see, and their destiny to be just like the adults around them. Pretty sad stuff.
