When Willie Mae Seaton, now 98, opened her 7th Ward neighborhood restaurant, she surely never imagined food writers would call her fried chicken America's best. Or that her Willie Mae's Scotch House would win a James Beard Award.

Seaton also likely didn't imagine one day she'd see her name on St. Charles Avenue.

Next Friday (Oct. 31), Willie Mae's Grocery and Deli opens Uptown at the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Cherokee Street.

quote:

Willie Mae's Grocery and Deli will have the full menu of the original. The spicy, wet-battered fried chicken, which half the customers order, will of course be available along with the white beans, the red beans and the pork chops. The menu Uptown will also have po-boys, salads and even wraps.

quote:

In recent years, the St. Charles Avenue building has housed a string of restaurants. Most recently it was the Fat Hen Grocery. Inevitably, some will say it's cursed. But Seaton-Stewart isn't worried.

Was about to post this, thanks.

Not sure that little area will support a fried chicken joint for very long.

Plus, that spot is cursed. It's the old Fat Hen home.

Is Dunbar's still operating out of the Loyola Law School cafeteria?

I used to go there when it was on Freret and Freret was still the hood. Good stuff. Never tried their joint in Loyola Law School though.

I think I've had the biggest pork chop in my life there. It was thin cut, but they beat the shite out of it. I miss that place.

Daily Bread was there a long time. That building is zoned funny IIRC, that's why it's will be a "grocery". And the Fat Hen people had their own issues. I hope this place isn't just a name

I think I've told this here before, but the wife and I went into her store right before she got busted and she gave us literally a steal of a deal on two chairs.

I'm pretty sure, I have somebody else's chairs in my living room.

Dunbar's has been gone from Loyola for quite some time; currently, a La Divina is in the Pine St/Broadway Activities Center building @ Loyola Law campus.

I'm beyond happy about this one--I can walk from my office to excellent fried chicken? Gonna need bigger pants, LOL.

While I feel like that spot is doomed to failure I bet a big name like this can keep it up. Tourists can ride the streetcar from downtown and hit up Willie Mae's while at it, regardless of it being the original one.

I briefly lived nearby that building when it was a middle eastern place, if I recall correctly. Always felt like a random spot for a restaurant.

The location is fine and the building is workable. It just had a string of failed concepts, over priced, bad service, and/or bad food. The location then got tainted as a loser.

If Willie Mae's is managed well, that could be just the type of place to thrive there. I have high hopes!

If they don't stray from the philosophy of the current place, I think it'll be ok.

Definitely easier for me to get to, so I'll for sure be there.

Wondering how it'll affect the current one. I'm sure tourists would rather go to/stay around St. Charles than the 7th ward.

This place spends a ton of money on advertising, yet I don't know anyone personally who has eaten there.

I tried to go in June with an out-of-town friend on a weeknight at 7pm, only to find out they are closed on Sundays, and close at 5pm every other day- so, basically, I will never eat there. The area off Orleans Ave. is not a place I want to be, either.

Good to see this new location is in a much better area and will actually be open at night so I can try it after work. I will give it a try.

Have you been to the Willie Maes in the seventh ward? The patrons are about 90% white and about 50% tourists.
