So tonight I made a tomato gumbo. Really beautiful tomatoes round here and lots of okra. They go well together. My roux was almost black. Delicious.

It was really really good... Loosely based off recipe out of the Pruhdomme Family Cookbook.

I think it will be fairly well received.

I've never had a gumbo with tomato. What you have there I would definitely eat. You got some potato salad ?

I put tomatos in both my chicken and seafood gumbo. Always have, always will.

And to the haters

I think I'm gonna make gumbo today, but not with tomato. That does look damn tasty though

Nope. Just a shrimp and okra gumbo with tomatoes in it.

What you did is how sauce piquante is made.. Roux, trinity, tomatoes, etc.

You can call it tomatoes with gumbo, but it's the steps for sauce piquante.

Only way it's tomatoes with gumbo is if you actually made gumbo and then tossed whole tomatoes in it at the end or something

Fwiw, I love sauce piquante and would definitely eat it.

EDIT--Apparently, you didn't use sauce/paste? So it's not exactly like a sauce piquante.

I don't put tomatoes in gumbo, but I'm sure it's not disgusting or anything. Just not my preference.

Wrong. No sauce piquante that I've ever made or eaten has okra. All have tomato paste, fried down to give it a golden color and many have a can of tomato sauce in them.

I make both gumbo and sauce piquante and they are not near the same. And I put tomatos in my gumbo and I know a lot of people that do. And they call it gumbo as well.
