Apple may be the most successful, envied tech company on the planet. But its dominance is far from obvious according to new data from IDC, which tracks worldwide smartphone shipments.

Apple's market share for the iPhone slipped year on year to just 11.7% of the entire market, while Android's market share increased to 84.7%.

Similarly, while Apple sold 35.2 million phones last quarter, an increase of 4 million; Android phones reached 255.3 million new buyers, an increase of 64 million new phones, IDC reports.

In other words, there are seven Android phones sold for every one iPhone.

As long as I-Fanatics are willing to pay a premium for Apple products, they will continue to print money.

I am so tired of seeing these stupid, meaningless statistics. The iPhone is a cell phone, and Android is an operating system. How are these two things even remotely comparable?

That's because there are around 10 or so different android phones to choose from vs 2-3 iphone models.

until recently apple did not have an entry level phone like some of the phones running android.

i would like to see the sales for an individual phone versus the iphone 5, just curious, maybe the Galaxy s3 did outsell the iphone 5.

Comparing sales of one OS to another will definitely be skewed similar to PC vs Mac.

Market share. Far from meaningless, it is probably the most meaningful statistic there is.

And because iPhones only run iOS, the market share of which is compared to Android, they are more than remotely comparable. They are directly comparable.

The point of these articles and statistics is not to see which company sells the most cell phones, or makes the most profit from selling cell phones... it is to recognize trends, specifically market share of mobile platforms.

Why someone always feels the need to point out the obvious fact that iPhone is a phone, while Android is an OS, is beyond me.

Most android phones are cheap. There are a ton of people in developing countries buying cell phones. Since they can't afford $1000+ iPhones in those countries, they buy the cheap, shitty android phones. Most are literally a step above feature phones, and are not comparable to a Galaxy S4 or whatever is the Android flavor of the week.

Did your article discuss Apple's share of smartphone profits?

It did mention that, actually, but what does that have to do with market share trends?

I think a much fairer comparison would be iPhone sales vs Android flagship phones.

Cheap, shitty android phone users don't nearly consume as much content and definitely don't spend money on apps. I admit that I haven't really followed it much lately, but I've read multiple times around the web that developers are making much more on app sales on the iOS side.

This. Not really comparing the same thing here IMO

It doesn't matter more when you do research and write an article specifically about share. What is so difficult to grasp, here?

But anyway, market share determines and precedes profit, that is why share is so often looked at. And if these trends continue, with Android's share not only eating away at iOS' share, but doing so at an accelerating rate... this information is crucial in predicting future profits. This is why the article contends that Apple desperately needs iPhone6 to be a hit.

Is there anything else from the article that you need me to explain?

Nothing suggests this is true in Apple's case.

They are selling more phones than ever at stunningly high profit, much higher profits than their competition.
The competition's increasing market share is in low profit, low margin phones that Apple has no interest in.

So the title is grossly misleading.
