I had Cox before then switched to DirecTV. I find that the quality is much better with DirecTV. I'm thinking about switching to UVerse for TV to save money plus be guaranteed to have the SEC Network. Is there much difference in the quality between DirecTV and UVerse?

Uverse TV > DirecTV IMO.

I had DirecTV for damn, over 10 years and switched to Uverse about 4 years ago. Much prefer Uverse.

UVerse is a complete crap shoot based on where you live, I would guess >80% of the folks I know that tried it cancelled after a week or two, if it even worked at all. In addition, there have been restrictions on number of TV's on at a time, not sure what it is now.

Reasons?
I did not dislike DirecTV by any means, but the customer service was terrible and the price difference for same package was night and day. I didn't have major outages with DirecTV, but Uverse is better in that regard.

Comparing the two:
Quality of reception = slight advantage to Uverse.
Customer service = advantage Uverse.
Price differential = advantage Uverse.

DirecTV sends me snail-mail weekly offering discounts, but I'm happy with my Uverse TV service.

It depends on how many boxes you have.

We're a family of 4, so I have a box in the living room, one in the bedroom for my wife and I, and 1 each in the kids rooms. For a total of 4.

All 4 boxes can watch TV at the same time. If you are recording a show, then it will use a box to do so. But you can watch any recording while a show is being taping and still have all 4 going. The only issue can be if you're recording 3-4 shows simultaneously. But that's very rare.

I think it also depends on how good your connection is, some may not have the bandwidth so support more than 2-3 HD feeds at one time.

Yeah and as you said, folks you know hate it.

I'm just basing my opinion on my experience. I've had long term experience with both. But as with anything, mileage will vary.

ETA: And I do have HD for all 4 TV's and for me it hasn't been an issue.

This is where things differ from location to location. Where I live, due to my distance from the VRAD, my limitation is 4 streams at once (whether it's recording 2 and watching 2, or watching all 4, or recording 3 and watching 1, etc). And only two of them can be HD. The other two have to be SD. It has nothing to do with the number of receivers we have.

Even with the limitations in my situation, I still recommend U-Verse. But it's just me and my wife. I'm sure when my kids get older, there will be more of an issue with hogging the HD streams, and I'll probably end up switching to something less primitive in that regard, unless U-Verse decides to upgrade the neighborhood.

Had DirecTV for six years; have had UVerse for two months now.

Loved DirecTV. Really no complaints, and for me, the customer service was always great. Problem was, I had to go through Comcast for Internet, so between DirecTV/Comcast Internet, my monthly bill was over $200.

Decided to cut costs, and cancelled DTV in April. Lasted a month before giving in and adding UVerse, bundling TV with Internet. For year, my bill is over $100 less, and even once the promotion is over, I'll be saving considerably more than before.

Haven't had any problems with UVerse, yet, TV or Internet. I find the DTV picture is slightly better (enough to notice), but love that you can watch recorded shows on any UVerse box (could never get my DTV Whole-Home DVR to work). Also, UVerse has a wireless receiver that is pretty sweet. Can't wait to bring it outside during football season while grilling.

Can't go wrong any way. I do prefer UVerse's packages. The cheaper packages have more of what I want compared to DTV's cheaper packages.

I've had both here in Houston, and I'm currently with DirecTV. The picture quality with any satellite system, whether it's DISH or DirecTV, is going to be better than any cable or fiber optic signal. The satellites don't compress the signal, but cable and fiber are both compressed which results in poorer picture quality.

As far as reception, it's satellite vs. cable. Cable doesn't lose signal during heavy precipitation or lightning events.

This is going to be to each their own. Everyone has different customer service experiences. With that being said, I have never heard anyone say that ATT provides better customer service than Directv. Directv bends over backwards trying to keep customers and offers free programming, lower prices, equipment upgrades, etc to make sure they keep their customers. That is, of course, unless you never bother calling them and asking them for it.

Quality post overall, but not sure why you couldn't get this to work. Must not have had your Direct connected to the internet. I have 2 DVRs (one is a genie and one is the older model DVR-when they upgraded me they told me to keep that one, so I didn't lose my old stuff, plus I can record 6 shows at once) and one normal receiver and I can watch anything that was recorded on either DVR on any of my 3 TVs without the slightest issue.

Directv now has this as well.

DIRECTV by a mile

picture is night and day better, more content

the new genie is faster than any box uverse has

they both have wireless so thats a push

my number 1 biggest reason- directv has the HD and SD channel as the same channel and i dont have to effin go to the 1800s and look for HD like uverse

also everyone ive known with Uverse says they have an outage once a week
