Looking to spend around $300 total, 7' or longer rod and spinning reel.

I just got a Stradic FJ 3000 on a 7'2" M 13 Fishing Omen Green rod. I really like this combo quite a bit so far.

It came out to about $285 plus tax.

The stradic's are nice. But they are expensive and will eat up a lot of your $300.00 budget unless you can find a good sale on one or combo.

Cabelas Stradic rod/reel combo $299.00

I would recommend checking out the Shimano Saros. It is a really nice reel and you should have no problems pairing it up with a nice rod for around $250.00.

I think any of the Shimano suggestions will work well.

I reallly like my St. Croix MF. Should run you about 120.

ETA: 4000 will work, but I prefer a 2500 or 3000

I've caught thousands of trout and never needed a $300 set up

I have to agree with this... I will spend $200 though. I just put a new falcon coastal md on my newest reel which is about 2 yrs old..
Got a bearing replaced on an old citica and moved the all star shrimp tail special to that one.
I have the all star shrimp tail special think about $80
Castaway saltwater md at about $90-$100
And the falcon coastal md popper at $90...
I like the falcon the best... It has the best features of both of the other rods combined, think I paid $90...
All 3 are 7'. Use all 3 on basically anything inshore.

I went and held/tried every rod I could find from $80-$120. They all felt the same to me except for one line... TFO Signature Series (Spinning) I only found them in stock at BPS here. The 7' ML is in a whole different category than the others. It is far "lighter" than other ML yet I can still whip a small jig a mile and hurl a cork pretty good too. It is kind of specific rod because once you go MH or 7'6" it doesnt seperate itself from other rods.

I bought a $300 Calcutta reel back in 1996. Still use it to this day. If that is not getting your money's worth I'm not sure what is.

Point is--buy cheap and buy often.

Penn SSV5500/Penn Legion Rod. I have owned many reels; the Penns get the job done and last forever.

As far as Spinning reels, Daiwa IMHO has more value than Shimano and have always had a better drag which is important. Look at same retails and the Daiwa will have more goodies, like bearings , pounds of drag ect. Love the Samuri braid as well. Smooth as glass but spendy.

I love these spinning rods. I paid about $60 for them 2 years ago. Well made for the money. 8ft one piece rods.

Stradic FJ 3000 is $153 at Puglia's in Metairie. It was only about $20 more than the Saros.
