So I'm driving home from the grocery when I pass my 2 youngest kiddos (ages 4 and 11) in the road messing with a roadkill squirrel. They give me a quick background and ask if they can take it home to process.

Unfortunately, I knew Mama Coastie would have a total cow and strongly object, so I told the kids, "Sure, go ahead."

Baby proudly parades roadkill to Mama. Tells her "we found it in the road and a car ran over its head and it's still warm and fresh, and (brother) is going to skin it and cook it so we can eat it for dinner and it's going to be yummy and (brother) is going to keep the pelt..." and babbles on and on the way only a 4 year-od can...

….and Mama Coastie is like…..

Time to get to work…

Brother completes the entire cleaning and skinning process all by himself (I was quite proud of him).

A present is left on the kitchen counter for Mama Coastie. She squawks again…we laugh again...

and brother cooks the squirrel.

ETA: (wrapped in foil with butter, cooked 2.5 hrs @ 275 deg ...meat falls off the bones...simple way for a little kid to cook)

Dat was some good stuff!

Fried? Squirrel sauce piquante would have made that lil fella downright tasty.

Yes I do. And they're allowed to make fires in my burn pile area and they have a rifle in their room.

Must really suck to be your kid.

I hope not..I also get them their shots and make them brush their teeth...Letting them play in the street, and eat food they found there is not an option..Sorry your kids are so hungry they have to eat food the buzzards didn't carry off..

I have yet to ever eat a tree rat. I really hope that I am never that hungry.

And just a note: my cat ate a squirrel and died a week later. The vet said that the squirrel was sick and made my cat sick. I'm sure cooking kills that kind of thing, but just be mindful of that.

I guarantee that squirrel was fresher than anything at the local grocery store. I still wouldn't partake however.

Coastie, what's up with the fuchsia plates? I think you fried a few of my monitor's pixels.

Holy shite this thread. Well done, sir. I legitimately have nothing to say. I'm speechless.

I'll be honest -- I'd eat a deer that was hit by a car. There's enough meat there that wouldn't be ruined. But I'd never eat a squirrel. I guess if it was literally only the head...

But...

Well done.
