MoPho - Review

I was having a hankering for pho because it was a wee bit chilly outside.
Mopho is new, it's close to my humble abode, and it's on my way home from work.
First off, I love the name. What can I say? I'm a sucker for funny names of establishments.
The atmosphere is really nice. It's definitely not your run of the mill Vietnamese joint, and you wouldn't expect it to be with a chef that once cooked with John Besh. It's dimly lit with pretty brown and orange colors as the color palette. I really liked their use of old fashioned Edison light bulbs. It was a nice touch.
I decided to sit at the bar. A couple different people waited on me. The service was quick and attentive.
First you pick your broth (fowl, beef, pork, etc.). Then you pick 3 out of 4 proteins to add to it. I decided to go with the pork pho. For my proteins I choose duck meatballs, pork belly and pork shoulder.
As another review stated, I was disappointed in the fixins that came out. There wasn't very much of it, and the basil and cilantro were limp.
Now for the pho. I really loved the broth of this pho, but that didn't hold a candle to the meat. The meat was absolutely delicious. But I do have to say that even though I loved this, it didn't seem like pho to me. Something was missing...I'm thinking it was star anise? I would get this again because it's a great soup, but likely wouldn't get it to satisfy my pho craving.
I also thought the serving was small. It's noodles! They're cheap! Gimmie more! I was happy with the amount of meat, but really wanted more noodles and broth.
When I normally eat pho, I'm so stuffed I could barely move. This time I left feeling like I could've eaten more.
The menu was pretty adventurous, and I'm looking forward to going back and trying some of their other offerings.

Same here. I really want to like this place but I've already thrown the towel in on the pho after a few visits. Sucks because I really like the options you have for the pho.

Have you tried anything else? There were several things on the menu that I'd love to try. It just won't be my go to pho place. I just can't seem to find pho that I love without going to the wank.

I posted my comments on the previous MoPho thread...my problems w/the pho were an overwhelming fried garlic garnish that gained strength with each passing moment...and the silly metal spoons, which aren't deep enough to get a decent mouthful of broth, plus they fall/slide down into the bowl.

They probably won't last. This lack of attention to detail is indicative of many more problems.

I love that in Viet wonton soups. In pho that would be off putting. Sounds like this place is janky.

The spoon didn't bother me. The spoons at all Viet places would fall into the bowl if you don't hold onto it.

Fried shrimp spring roll which was good and the duck Banh Mi which I thought was awesome. I love the little cracker things they serve with it. It's in my regular lunch rotation for now but I still will go elsewhere for my pho.

Trying pho for the first time tomorrow for lunch. Where should I go and what should I get? (Don't really want to venture to the wank for tan dinh)
I was thinking Lilly's.

Excellent choice. I really like the spicy shrimp and the chicken. I love to sub veggies for noodles there. They really hook it up.

Nice review.
I've yet to try the Pho at MoPho, but will be returning soon.
Here is the other thread with several other reviews.

As you stated, the menu is broad. Need to check out their entree dishes. That may be their strengh.

Umm, no. Most places use a flared-rim bowl and a spoon with an angled bend. The spoon sits with its bottom on the bowl and angled handle against the flared side. It does not slide to the bottom and require you to fish it out with chopsticks.
The awkwardness of the spoon & bowl are matched by the stinginess of the herb plate. Why can a place charging $6/bowl for pho manage to have a healthy portion of bean sprouts, cilantro, basil, rau ram, culantro, etc. but a place w/a higher pricing point has such a stingy and uninspiring offering?
I don't mind paying $$$ for ethnic food. But I want it to be at least as good as the cheap joints it is attempting to "upscale". MoPho's not there yet. I don't care where the chef used to work--he needs a remedial course in viet herb plates.

I was leaning toward the spicy shrimp. What's another good one there?

Agreed.
He may have been overly concerned with his Hipster bona fides.

For your first time pho? That doesn't even sound like pho.
You have to go to Pho Bang in NOLA East at least once. That's pho to me.

Spent more time coming up with a funny name than details.

Is it any different than any of the other pho bangs around town ?
