The wife's birthday is coming up and she wants to try Mizado for her birthday dinner since her friend recommended it. Has anyone been before? Anything on the menu not to miss or to completely avoid?

Thanks!

Took my wife a while back. Loved the place. I did the tequillia sample thing.
All of the food was good. They def. have some unusual salsas and guac stuff.

The lobster taco looks amazing.
Just order a bunch of stuff in small quantities and go to town.

And don't come back bitching that there is no free chips and salsa. That is for amateurs.

May be hard to mess up Mexican food but Velvet Cactus in Lakeview certainly did it last time I was there. The people of this board have led me to some awesome meals before so i put my trust in them before google users.

Thanks for the info notiger! We were looking at the menu last night and there certainly are lots of tasty-sounding tacos and cerviches. Looking forward to it even without free chips and salsa

went last night. definitely leaps and bounds better than velvet cactus. really cool atmosphere and it seems like one of those places that only hire ridiculously good looking waitresses which was a plus. The salsa sampler was really good. Alot of good flavors to try. I wish the tacos were more of a mix and match like rum house. A bunch of really good tacos on the menu that I wanted to try. Margaritas were really good and i really enjoyed the Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita

I had a review of it on here. I liked it, good food, enjoyed everything, but the habenero is the spiciest sauce I've had in a long time. i'll avoid that one, lol.

Is it just overpriced Mexican food?

Went again last night. Everything was excellent. I really like the margaritas. The Gaucho Steak with Chimichurri was outstanding. Those Pork Belly potatoes are the best side dish potatoes I have ever had at a restaurant.

She got the Carne tacos, I like how they serve the regular tacos, with every thing separately then you make your own. Also tried the tableside guac (needed salt and there is none at the table)
and the beef tamale. But with two drinks each, diner with tip was a little above $100.

So it's definitely a place that you can eat inexpensively at, but also a place where you can easily spend more than $50 a person.

I need to try this place soon. Good buddy at work has been twice now, sat at the bar by himself and gotten the guac, duck tacos and some margs and said everything was killer.

It's not overpriced at all.

And it's "Peruvian"

Went back in March with my gf and another couple. Someone at the table got that steak and I had a bite...

So freaking good. I had the carnitas tacos and they were also very very good.

I can confirm this theory. Bartenders too.

Went Saturday and the place was slam packed full of attractive white folk. We grabbed a margarita at the bar while we waited for a table. Margarita was solid .. a little sweet for my taste, they put a crap ton of agave nectar. But that's better than something overloaded with shitty sour mix; which this was not.

Sat at a small 2-person booth .. it's a cool space. Large open dining room and pretty lively in there. Had the guac to start which was delicious. Top 5 in the city I'd say. Next had one of the tuna ceviches w/ ponzu sauce, sliced jalapeno + avacado that was pretty righteous. Nice portion too for $14 bucks.

Then we split the duck tacos which I found rather unimaginative, taste was alright but I wanted some bigger flavors. Also got the mac n cheese w/ chorizo that was unbelievably rich. Could only eat a few bites .. decent, but wouldn't order again.

This was my primary complaint. I was pretty jazzed when I saw you get 4 tacos for $13 bucks, but then was informed by the waitress that it's 4 of the same tacos .. can't choose 4 separate ones. That would have made things 100x better, IMO.

ETA: also, the valet parking is annoying as frick.

Thats all I have. Building is that pink building where Fountainebleau and Napoleon meet. A few people have poked around and looked at it for a restaurant, glad to see it getting back into commerce.

my reveiw of it

I've been five times now.

I agree with R2R about the tacos. I would rarther have a choice, but you do build your own, so I can see why it's not mix and match. Though I think I would prefer mix and match.

Only other complaint is that some dishes are overly spicy. AND I love spice. I make my Red Beans 4 alarm. But this stuff is spicy if you get the wrong thing. The Salsa with Chipotle in it... whoa.

The Verde salsa with avocado is outstanding.
I love the Pomegranate margaritas too.

Also they have an excellent Brunch.

First pic is of the three salsas the green one is the avocado verde cream salsa.

They always give you pickled veggies and fried chickpeas. Also pictured are our margaritas.

Then this is the Peruvian Lost Bread

This is CHILAQUILES ROJOS CON POLLO
