My 18 month old daughter is having surgery tomorrow to fix a birth defect in her legs. They will be lengthening her left leg and repairing her left ankle. Figured the OT was a good place to turn for some good thoughts and prayers.

TIA

Yeah we had to relocate for 4 months because they do all the therapy at the hospital.

Excuse me for asking, but how do they lengthen a leg?

Prayers sent.

Stay strong for your wife (and daughter of course). Speaking from experience, that was the best thing my husband could have done for me when my daughter was in the NICU and then later had surgery.

I quickly learned I am not programmed to have a sick baby. I never take a single day for granted that we are healthy and happy.

It's pretty incredible. They break the tibia and separate it slightly. Then they put screws in the tibia that come out of her leg. Everyday we have to turn the screws slightly to separate the bone. New bone grows in the space. It will give her 2" of length.

i think it is pretty bad for the first 2 weeks. we will also probably need more surgeries in the future. but it beats the alternative. first pediatric ortho recommended amputation of both legs.
