first pediatric ortho recommended amputation of both legs.

holy crap...no intervening treatment, just amputation? Kudos for not following that recommendation and getting a second opinion.

it is pretty common to amputate children's legs that have this condition. however, there are a few doctors that have mastered the leg lengthening and ankle surgeries. she has the same thing that oscar pistorius has.

It's pretty incredible. They break the tibia and separate it slightly. Then they put screws in the tibia that come out of her leg. Everyday we have to turn the screws slightly to separate the bone. New bone grows in the space. It will give her 2" of length.

I actually saw a doccumentary on this procedure...pretty damn amazing...

I know you are worried sick, but kids do unbelieveably well with this kind of thing...ten years from now, it will all just be a memory and your daughter will be better than new...

Thoughts and prayers sent. My baby boy was born about the same time as your daughter, I can't even imagine how you're feeling.

My husband had surgery in January of 2013. Umbilical hernia.

My SON had surgery in December 2013. Plate and screws put in his wrist.

I was a freaking nervous wreck for my son's ... husband not so much. He looked at me while we were waiting and said "are you ok" and I mentioned that I wasn't nearly as nervous/uneasy when he had his surgery.

Mine is older than yours and it may have been all in all easier than handing over your 18 month old ... you indeed have my prayers!
