Let's talk obedience training...

purchased a 10 week old female yellow lab from Kake at Prize My Eyes outside Lafayette 3 weeks ago. Anybody have the name of a well respected trainer they could share? She needs to start with obedience... Maybe a little retriever after but obedience to start...

May be a little far for you, but my brother sent his lab to wild wings kennel as a puppy. They did a great job with obedience and basic retrieving training. He picked up the rest and he was a great retriever back in his day. He's a lazy house dog now. Wild Wings Kennel

A shock collar is one of the best training tools ever invented but has ruined more dogs than helped because they were in the hands of non professional trainers. If you buy one have a professional trainer teach you how and when to use it

I almost beat mine with that book and her paperwork from Wildrose this am. Bitch was hyped up, guessing the weather. She calmed down for a few retrieves and I shoved her behind in kennel.

My dog was scared as hell of the shock collar. He would drop to the ground and start pissing everywhere when I turned it up. Good old fashioned arse whoopin worked wonders for him

Some OPs don't need to own dogs. Many dogs are more intelligent than their owners.If you plan to own a dog make sure that you are an adult thinking person with a ton of patience.Secondly,try to love the dog at least a fraction of as much as your dog will love you if you treat it kindly.

Teach it: no, sit, stay, come, down, and not to jump on people, there obedience school is over.
Also, you will need a hell of a lot of patience.
Punishment should be based on the offense, especially if you are going to use a shock collar. I would also recommend getting one that beeps, once or twice of a slight shock with the beeping and after that you can just about beep them only and they will stop.

I used the Tri-tronics Retriver Training book. The big thing about using a e-collar is before using it the dog must understand the command and pressure. People get in trouble when they put the collar on and the dog is unsure of what is expected and what that pinch means. Just my opinion, only trained one dog, but she was pretty good.
