Dog question...

I'm living on about 25acres of wooded land (unfenced). I'm looking for a dog that will be able to roam the property but know that he won't leave and not come back.

Is that asking too much or is there a breed better than others for this situation. I don't want to pen him up all day. I'd also like a breed that would chew someones head off that wasn't welcome on the property.

whatever you get, you're gonna have to train him before you just let him roam free

You can't guarantee that with any breed. If you aren't gonna have a fenced in area for the dog then you need to have the dog inside and outside when it can be supervised.

You really wanna risk the dog running into the road and getting hit? Roaming onto someone else's property and getting shot (if he was doing damage to the property)?

Sounds like you might not be ready to own a dog.

What you need is a Blackmouth Cur

You described their work to a T

Do some research and you will find this is what you're looking for

Make sure you train it first. Might want to get it fixed too. Dogs will wander for miles for some puss

Blackmouth Cur is a good one, too.

There are nothing but other homes with large amounts of land....so no real chance of him running into much traffic at all.

Maybe I'm asking to much from a dog...but my inquiry was about whether there is a breed that is kind of a home body (doesn't roam far from home).

Maybe not plausible but appreciate your input.

I've had various breeds my whole adult life. I've found they all wander to varying degrees until they get older. Then they seem to "patrol" the homestead and lay about the barn or house periphery.

Maybe a Great Pyrennes would work for you

Read up on the Black Mouth and see if it fits your situation.

Don't get a bloodhound or any hound breed for that matter. Those frickers do nothing but roam.

You can fence in your house and almost an acre for 10k. A black chain link looks good in a rural setting. That and a black mouth cur and you are golden!

I like what I'm reading about the Blackmouth Cur...seems to be bread for exactly what I'm looking for.

Do you recommend male of female?

Good luck with that. Any dog you let roam loose won't be your dog for long.

I got 2 black mouth curs and they would work perfect

I like my female a little better for house life. She's my girl, but for hunting my male can take down hogs, deer, rabbits, etc
