Any indication of what this means

Guests who've dined with us in Baton Rouge will recognize many of our signature dishes that we're bringing with us to Ruffino's on the River," said Sclafani, Ruffino's executive chef and co-owner. "But I've also taken the opportunity to develop and create a few dishes that will be unique to Lafayette. The new setting and larger kitchen has given me an opportunity to push the envelope a bit more, and nothing could be more exciting to me as a chef

I appreciate Ruffinos for what it is, but it's no Pamplona.

I can't wait to try ruffinos but people in BR forget how many good restaurants are in lafayette these days.

I'll say this:

I like Ruffino's, but there are some in BR that give it a little too much credit.

That said, it will do well in Lafayette. But to say it will be the best restaurant there doesn't recognize something that to me is obvious: As a food city, Lafayette is head and shoulders better than Baton Rouge.

As a food city

There is a huge difference, although they can exist together, between a food city and a restaurant city. For instance, I think of New York as a restaurant city, a place where restaurants thrive. Lafayette to me is more of a food city, a place where the populace is obsessed with food but much more so in cooking and eating.

Spot on, IMO. Lafayette is a really good food city. No one will confuse it with a destination for fine dining, though. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

It's going to be interesting to observe how this place does. I don't think they will succeed, and not because of the food (I have never eaten at Ruffinos). I think that location/space is going to be challenging for any restaurant. It's big, very big, and I have to think the overhead on that place puts the occupant in a deep hole that any concept/chef/restauranteur would be challenged to overcome.

BlackenedOut, excellent point.

Is Ruffino changing the guts of this place at all? It may be the biggest restaurant I've ever been in. I think they could make better use of that space then Cochon did.

Here is the follow-up, if Ruffino's cant make it at that location, does it turn to an indictment of Lafayette?

For a city its size, Lafayette and the Lafayette area have a significant number of dining options. The only competition Ruffino's will face however, and the only restaurant that should feel any concern is Carraba's.

The only indictment on Lafayette, if Ruffino's fails, is that they chose another option, around the corner, that's easier to access.

I would think one is looking for a very different dining experience when going to Ruffino's or going to Carraba's.

I'm not sure how you mean that.

Lafayette is an oddly fickle place, though. That's not even meant as a put down, nor is it meant as any sort of compliment. It is, what it is.

Agreed. And if that's the case. I think the question would have been answered.

I enjoy Ruffinos, but they arent on a pedestal for me.
I've had some very good meals there though and they really do make an effort in all aspects of their product.
I have no problems recommending Ruffinos, but I don't call them a "can't miss" kind of place.
I think Lafayette would be losing out not to support them. I haven't been to new location, but it sounds nice.
