I'll say this:
I like Ruffino's, but there are some in BR that give it a little too much credit.
That said, it will do well in Lafayette. But to say it will be the best restaurant there doesn't recognize something that to me is obvious: As a food city, Lafayette is head and shoulders better than Baton Rouge.

There is a huge difference, although they can exist together, between a food city and a restaurant city. For instance, I think of New York as a restaurant city, a place where restaurants thrive. It's going to be interesting to observe how this place does. I don't think they will succeed, and not because of the food (I have never eaten at Ruffinos). I think that location/space is going to be challenging for any restaurant. It's big, very big, and I have to think the overhead on that place puts the occupant in a deep hole that any concept/chef/restauranteur would be challenged to overcome.

Is Ruffino changing the guts of this place at all? It may be the biggest restaurant I've ever been in. I think they could make better use of that space then Cochon did.

For a city its size, Lafayette and the Lafayette area have a significant number of dining options. The only competition Ruffino's will face however, and the only restaurant that should feel any concern is Carraba's.
The only indictment on Lafayette, if Ruffino's fails, is that they chose another option, around the corner, that's easier to access.

I'm not sure how you mean that.
Lafayette is an oddly fickle place, though. That's not even meant as a put down, nor is it meant as any sort of compliment. It is, what it is.

I enjoy Ruffinos, but they arent on a pedestal for me.
I've had some very good meals there though and they really do make an effort in all aspects of their product.
I have no problems recommending Ruffinos, but I don't call them a "can't miss" kind of place.
I think Lafayette would be losing out not to support them. I haven't been to new location, but it sounds nice.
