Only and hour and a half in.

Can anyone give some non-big spoiler recommendations about what groups to join/not join? Have Bern invited to sign up for imperial army(?) and pretty sure that will be a bad idea.

I'll be honest...when I started playing I just took off in some direction and ended up the head of the mages guild before I even realized I hadn't done any of my main quest line. If you think signing up for the Army is a bad idea (I did too) don't do it. I went to the mage's guild because that's how I wanted to make my toon. I'm not very far in to the game either though, so I'm not one for advice, just typing all of this out to basically say you should enjoy the main quest line a bit and don't skip it on accident. My first dragon fight was a hell of a lot later than it should have been.

I did most of the game b/f siding with army or stormcloaks so i would have a nice save point to get both achievements. You will prolly start a quest and realize 3 hours later you have gotten sidetracked hunting animals and robbing houses instead of getting anything done

It really doesn't matter which side you join, imperial or rebel. They are both fun.

The more important decision is werewolf or vampire.

Faction questlines in order of my enjoyment:

Thieves' Guild
Dark Brotherhood
Mages' Guild
Blades (Main Quest)
Companions
Civil War (Stormcloaks and Imperials)
Bards' College

In the end, both sides of the Civil War end up being dicks.. I just couldn't find myself siding with the assclowns that tried to cut off my head.

Thanks for the info - guess I'll just have to play them out. I just hate making choices early and then finding out stuck in the future with a bad direction.

There isn't really a bad way to play Skyrim. Whether you go by quest markers or just explore and happen upon things to do, you will never feel like you aren't getting something out of it.

I joined the theives guild. But you have to complete or atleast get the white run done to get to the gray beards to learn more (or better) your shout. Along the way though, hit up every cave you can.

Start learning archery and sneak early. Archery while using sneak x3 damage to every hit. Plus headshots are worth even more. Plus if you're not noticed, then you can sneak in and out quickly.

Dont worry about lockpick. You can do that shite yourself with out even using a skill point.

Buy a house ASAP so you can store all of your shite.

Save up dedra hearts if you're going to smith (Deadric Armor)

If you're going to go towards a more magic approach to the game then the mages guild to the north, I highly recommend due to a lot of extra missions. Plus you get some pretty bad arse staffs.

Dont worry too much about the story line.

I was a wood elf and maxed out my Archery and Sneak first. Then divided the other skill points among Single hand, Alchemy(where I made my money), smithing(some money), enchantment, and a tiny amount of conjure for the conjuring of weapons.

If you can deal with the crouch walking everywhere I'd do sneak because its well worth it.

Also, I joined the Dark Brotherhood after I discovered over 75% of locations. It was easier to travel, assassinate, travel back, ???, profit.

Deadric Bow, with a frost enchantment is pretty awesome.

You can be part of the dark brotherhood, head of the mage's college, a companion, thieves guild member, etc. all at the same time.

With Dawnguard, the choice of vampire vs werewolf is made easier -- vampire without question. The best part about Dawnguard is that you no longer need to feed regularly to avoid being attacked on sight.

Since I have it for PC, there's a mod to let you be both a vampire and a werewolf, among other amazing mods that give the game hundreds upon hundreds of hours of play time. Plus, the nude and sex animation mods for shits n giggles.

As for imperials vs. stormcloaks, I prefer imperials simply because the female stormcloaks have a really annoying accent.

Wait to start the main quest(civil war)

But when you start it, choose to be a Stormcloak. Stormcloaks are proud people who fight for their lands, and the freedom to own and prosper on those lands.

Imperials are shills to taxes, forced laws, and Big Government. And Pussies to boot.
