I've got a buddy coming into town and I'm trying to compile a list for him of old, classic New Orleans bars/restaurants. Places where you can essentially get a po boy, bowl of gumbo, red beans and rice, fish bowl beers...neighborhood type places. Any suggestions?

So far, I've been thinking:

Parkway
Guys
Liuzza's
Liuzza's by the track
Frank and Johnny's
Cafe Navarre
Katie's

Mandina's should be near the top of such lists.

I personally think that Liuzza's and Mandina's are overrated, but hey, that's just me.

I like Charlie's Seafood in Harahan...

This.

If you cross the canal into Bucktown, R&O's is a good place to take out of towners.

I'd put Casamento's very high on that list.

Bozo's sucks.

Does Madigan's have food? I haven't been there since I was in high school, never think to eat there. I remember the place in the back GBs or something like that.

I find Mandina's to do a good job with what they do, and the atmosphere is old New Orleans personified.

Went to Mandina's on Canal, and then again to the one they had in BR. Didn't care for either one.

I'll add Venezia to the list.

Number one for me.

One that hasn't been mentioned is Parenton's.

I like Mandina's, too, Otis. Takes me back in time to old New Orleans. I agree that it does a good job for what it is and the menu is large so you please almost anyone. Good place.
