How do people let themselves become morbidly obese?

Watching the video in the Fat People are Awesome thread and I'm wondering how people can be morbidly obese.

I just don't see how people let themselves go like that.

I mean, I'm not in the shape I'd like to be in. I could lose 10 or 15 pounds simply because I'm not active enough and I have a relatively sedentary job, but I just can't fathom how someone can be 100-200-300 pounds overweight.

Is it just emotional issues? I can't believe there's any other excuse. Genes don't make you that fat.

Not sure about other areas of the country/world, but down here it's a disease.

A combination of laziness, poor food choices, and laziness.

There is truly nothing on this planet that disgusts me more than morbidly obese people. Sad thing is that I have to deal with them on a pretty regular basis.

Also, its a problem that exacerbates itself as it goes.

People get fat, the get depressed, they get lazier because they are depressed, they eat more because they are depressed, and they get fatter.

I always wonder this. At some point they weren't that fat. They had to look in the mirror one day and say "damn I am really gaining weight, I probably need to eat better and work out." And instead they just continued to eat McDonalds and do nothing but watch TV. I don't understand how anyone can be this lazy/undisciplined

I think its easy to eat and gain weight and get fat. But I don't see how someone could get 100+pounds over weight.

They just have to do no activities, and eat non stop.

That's a reason. But obese people use that excuse as they stuff their face with Mcdonalds. Being 300 pounds overweight isn't only b/c of a thyroid issue.

We are a pretty instant gratification society in America. We want to eat cheap, we want to eat fast and we want pills for all our ailments.

This is just terrible thinking. In reality, we have to keep active, walk places, eat fruits and vegetables and cook our own meals and work to keep our bodies healthy. But no one in America wants to hear that. They want to tell you their sob story and expect you to feel sorry for them. Sometimes that's enough to make them feel better about themselves. But not enough to get them losing weight.

This. If a fat person does the opposite of this, they will lose weight. Simple enough.

A complete lack of self-discipline. I'm not perfect, but I at a minimum drag myself out to the track every now and again.

I think a lot of people have an all or nothing attitude towards health and fitness. They are either dieting or eating fast food 3 times a day.

It doesn't help that they raise their kids to be fat too.

Those kids have no concept that it's even possible that they could be skinny, because they never have been.

So they turn out obsese without even realizing they have a choice.

This. I got a little overweight a couple of years ago but the next summer started eating less and moving more.......pretty simple fix.

I'm not sure. I mean I know the logistics of it, but I don't understand how you just don't care enough to do anything about it.

I just turned 30 and I'm eating better and staying active. I swim laps twice a week and play flag football for about 2 1/2-3 hours on the weekends. I got tired of looking at pics of me and thinking "Who is that dude?" I wasn't crazy fat but I needed to lose about 20 lbs.

I'd love to throw them under the bus (if they would fit) but I've had my issues that a normal person would be like "how did that person let himself get like that/go that far".

So in a way i'm sympathetic at the same time being disgusted.

Some of it is genes and thyroid issues, but when your state obesity rating is 33.4%, it's more than that.

Humans are habitual by nature. If you develop bad habits, without concentrated effort, you won't break them. I'm sure there are obese people who look in the mirror and say, "I want to change." But they find false comfort in their habits and usually return to them.

It's not just weight that this applies to. Watching too much TV, looking at porn, playing on the Internet, alcohol, nicotine, illegal drugs, these can all become addictive. Same with good habits to a degree. These can all become comforts.
