Just spent the weekend with my lady friend in Houston. We had a great time. Thought I'd post some reviews of our eats and drinks.

Friday Dinner:
El Tiempo – Arrived at El Tiempo around 9ish, maybe a little after. The place was packed. Put our name on the list, was told it was a 45 minute wait, so we grabbed a frozen marg. The margaritas were very very disappointing. Way too much mix and not enough tequila. It just tasted bad. We waited outside for a bit until a spot at the bar cleared. We ordered chips and salsa and within 5 minutes of it arriving our table was ready. So we left our margs at the bar and I got a beer at the table while the lady friend got a tequila and grapefruit drink. Boy oh boy was that sucker strong. It was good. I’m sure the premixed frozen margs just weren’t done right. One on the rocks would have been better. Chips and salsa were delicious. Salsa had a nice kick at the end to it. We ordered calamari and jalapenos as our app. We thought it was awesome and ate everything off the plate. We then shared an order of chicken and beef fajitas. The chicken was extremely delicious. Very tender and juicy. The steak was also pretty tasty. Overall a great place with a great atmosphere. Although we did notice about 60% of the place was full of gay men. A few lesbian women as well. May have been the location or just the night?? Also we both had some stomach problems the next day and a little bubble butt. Figured it was from us eating a lot but could be from the place. We both said we’d eat there again though.
Saturday Lunch:
Kona Grill in Galleria – They have a great drink menu. My lady friend got a cucumber mojito. Very very refreshing. I got something called the Skiwi kiss. Or something like that. Very fruity and beachy. I enjoyed it. Tuna wonton crips as an app were great. I had Chili something grilled salmon which I devoured and she got asparagus salad w/ chicken. It was the biggest salad I’ve ever seen. We ate everything and rolled out.
Saturday drinks:
La Carafe – Oldest bar/commercial building in Houston. Honestly the place was pretty creepy but cool. We walked in around 3 and it was only the bartender in there in dead silence. Ok beer selection, I was kind of disappointed, but it was cool to grab a drink in there and check out some history.
Flying Saucer – Awesome awesome place. We loved it here. The atmosphere, the beer, the food, everything. We wish there would be one in LA. We tried a few different beers, honestly we tried so much over the weekend I can’t tell you what I liked and didn’t like or even tried. It was a great time though. Got a flight of Texas beers. Some really good stuff. Also got the cheese fries. We destroyed them. Oh so good. Highly recommend everyone who loves beer to check this place out. SOO many choices.
Saturday Dinner:
Bombay Pizza – Decided to order pizza in the hotel room and take it easy Saturday night and just drink and eat in the room. Ordered a pizza with pepperoni, mushroom, tomatoes, mozzarella, and bell peppers. The ingredients on this thing were so fresh and tasty. The pizza however was very limp and soggy. Maybe we put too many toppings on it? But the crust part was so crispy and delicious. I loved it. Lady friend was kind of disappointed in the soggyness. We ate it all though and would probably get it again. At the place and maybe less toppings.
Sunday drinks/lunch:
Petrol Station – About 15 minutes from downtown. This place was our favorite part of the trip. We fell in love with the bar. The location, the menu, the atmosphere, the workers, everything. Tons of beers to choose from. Which was very surprising from a little place. We shared the Rancor burger. It’s at least a half pound patty with cheese, bacon, cheese, bacon, fried egg, and all the toppings. My mouth is watering just typing this. We probably tried a good bit of beers. Had a great time and met some great people there. This will be a place we always visit when in Houston or driving by.

THE END
P.S. Thanks to all the posters who gave us recommendations on where to eat/drink. We didn’t get to hit everything we wanted but will go back soon to just eat and drink.

Wow, the review of this place took an unexpected turn.

Bingo. I'll never understand why anyone likes more than 1 or 2 toppings on a pizza.

Good thing the kitchen was open when you went. Only time I dropped by there (via an expensive cab ride) the kitchen was closed. They did have a Vietnamese food truck parked outside. Wasn't all that great though. Solid beer selection for sure.

Nice write-ups. Houston food scene gets overlooked by people who never go there or go and don't know where/how to dine.

Bombay is also Indian pizza. The crust is more like a cracker (not a cracker thin crust, an actual cracker). Their food is okay, its about half a block from my office and I got burned out on it after like a month of being here. Now, the Thai place across the street...

Heading there tonight. Great little place. Burgers might be my favorite in all of Houston. Glad the kitchen is back open for business.

Yea we knew we made a mistake. But we were starving when we ordered it. And slightly intoxicated. So honestly we were lucky we didn't get the whole topping list on the pizza.

Petrol Station is awesome....tons of other great bars you missed out on, plus you didn't even do any of the brewery tours (St. Arnold's, Karbach, No Label). You should have gone to Hearsay Lounge next to LaCarafe, pretty good food.

Yeah, it was closed last time I went too... although I believe it was earlier that day. A shame too, the burgers are usual really good.

The guy who owns the place started his own brewing company too, called Brash Brewing. They are debuting in Louisiana at Avenue Pub sometime in September. Contract brewed out of Massachusetts so he can't even serve it in Texas due to TABC rules.

Probably location. If you were downtown, my guess is that you went to the one on Montrose because its the closest to downtown. If so, that would explain the demographics probably.

Montrose hasn't been a gay spot for at least a decade.

No that's about it. I thought that's what the purpose of this board was??

Hearsay Lounge

Was on my list of to go to places. Just ran out of time and stomach space. Will visit next time for sure.

brewery tours

Got in too late on Friday to do any and just didn't try the rest of the weekend. It is a must do next time I go though. Also I forgot to stop at Specs on Sat. . Again. Next time.

Hearsay has okay food. Its definitely not worth marking out on a trip though, plenty of places that are unquestionably better.
