Intermediate Accounting 1 and 2 and jobs

So everyone tells me that the intermediate accounting classes (1 and 2) are very important for Big 4 jobs in accounting along with a solid GPA. So I have a question. I received a C in Intermediate 1 and an A in Intermediate 2. Will the A possibly trump that C being that you need to know Intermediate 1 to even understand Intermediate 2 or is Big 4 out of the question for now? TIA

Good question...I hated Intermediate 1 and I'm taking Intermediate 2 right now during this summer .

I know people that got C's in both intermediates and still got a big 4 internship. It is all about going to the beta alpha psi events and working the recruiters. I even know kids with a sub 3.0 gpa that got offers. Also you need to be flexible, if you want to go to Nola you need to be a cant miss recruit. But there is a lot more opportunity in Houston. I just finished the recruiting process so feel free to ask more questions.

I am under the impression that big4 doesn't look at individual grades during recruitment. I'm not 100% though.
I got a B in both of those classes too. I only studied the night before tests because I was bored out of my mind with that stuff.

And you want to be an accountant?

Most top ten public accounting firms require at least a 3.2 Accounting GPA. When we recruit that is our minimum (we ask for your overall GPA too). The major GPA is only a portion though, we consider personal/interview skills, employment and other activities outside of school.
If you didn't have a job through out college you had better have a solid GPA and be really impressive in person.

I will be the first to tell you that it isn't that big of a deal. Just make sure your overall accounting GPA is solid.

I preferred Cost Accounting; much easier . Plus I'm doing the Internal Audit concentration at LSU. Trying to expand my horizons so I won't be totally pigeon-holed into one accounting sector vs. another. You have to admit, Int 1 and 2 are not very fun in terms of subject matter but Int Acct it is crucial to the CPA exam.

As others have said, I wouldn't worry about your letter grades in an individual class.
From my experience, you often might not even submit your transcript until you basically have the job locked up. So just keep your GPA up, your resume looking good and don't act like a tool. You'll be good.

If you hated these classes you should really think about changing your major

One class grade does not knock you out of contention for Big 4, at all. A solid overall GPA will be the most important factor, also join Beta Alpha Psi if you havent already.
There are a good bit of threads that cover this on the Money board (although maybe hard to find).
I will just say that the most important thing about getting into the Big 4 is your interview; if they like you and can see themselves working with you on a daily basis, you will get an offer. Of course, your resume needs to be good enough to get that interview, but again, one grade will not make a difference. they will not look at individual grades until you have already accepted an offer.

When I was with the Big 4, I think we looked at overall GPA and accounting GPA and didn't pay as much attention to individual classes. Advanced degrees help and leadership in BAP helps. I think we had an unwritten rule BAP Presidents always make it to the office interview.......

At the height of the recession mine required a 3.5 but before that it was a 3.0 to beconsidered.

That makes sense. And like I said before it matters WHERE you are looking. Houston all the firms are growing, but Nola not really. Also as far as I know lsu does all of their recruiting in the fall. But all the Texas cities do their recruiting in the spring, so they are at a disadvantage.

Nola's a pretty stagnant market.....knowing people helps too if you're that lucky. Either family who know partners/managers or knowing several staff 1-2 yrs. in who had class with/will go to bat for you is a big advantage too.....especially in a smaller market.

Just like Memphis, birmingham, etc. there just is not a lot of incoming business.

I received worse grades than those in Int 1 & 2 and work at a Big 4. I'm definitely the exception, however, and don't recommend slacking in these classes. Internship experience and interpersonal skills trump grades, but the grades def get you a foot in the door.

I had a buddy work for one of the big 4, shitty pay and long arse hours only to be laid Off after tax season because of lack of work.
You would be much better served getting a less stressful job with less hours and more pay

Screw the B4 and get a job at Shell or BASF. Good pay, no stress and great hours! Play golf every Friday.
