Gin, vodka? Straight up, on the rocks?

I go with vodka, preferably Grey Goose, on the rocks, extra dirty. I tend to finish off the olives too

Ketel One on the rocks and shaken real good. Dirty, but not too dirty.

ETA: a couple of drops of vermouth as well.

This.
I add three ice cubes. Tito vodka for me. Half the price of Grey Goose.

If you're a traditionalist, this is not a martini. I can let it slide, however.

I'm a gin guy (Hendrick's, Tang 10, Bombay Sapphire). Straight up, a little vermouth, slightly dirty, and one or two olives.

I'm a tanqueray fan. Can't stand Bombay sapphire. Too dry for me. Also, please don't bruise my gin. Leave the shaken crap to James Bond wannabes.

Slice a bit of lemon peel and wipe the inside rim of a martini glass. Drop peel in glass.

Fill a shaker to the top with ice. Tiny splash of sweet vermouth, and tiny splash of dry vermouth (tiny splash = as little as can be poured in.)

About a 4 count of gin (vodka if you like). A little larger splash of olive juice than vermouth.

Shake it until it's super cold. (Use a glass to cover the shaker, not those annoying martini shakers).

Strain into glass.

Gin with about a cap full of vermouth, lemon peel with a 2-splashs of olive juice. I use the juice from a jar of olives instead of the straight juice you can buy. I makes a big difference.

I find it odd that we call something with vodka in it a "martini" in the first place. What people call a vodka martini is pretty clearly its own drink, and it should have its own name.

This is not to say that the martini is "better" or "more authentic" than a vodka martini (really, who cares about whether your booze is "authentic?") But it really is a different thing.
