Sorry if this has already been discussed, but why is England #4 in FIFA? I just don't get it. They have all kinds of potential, but how can anyone really call them the 4th best team in the world?

I guess it's just the screwy way the FIFA rankings work?

Probably not as much as you think.

You really can't with a straight face.

Yup. We were ranked 4th once.

Yeah I remember that. But it was a brief stay. It seems like England never drops below the 6-8 range no matter what happens.

FIFA rankings don't really mean anything. It kind of sucks that they are such a big factor in seeding. They should go back to factoring in past performances like they used to.

There's no doubt FIFA rankings are screwy. 4 does seem high but at the same time I'm not sure if you can say anyone besides Spain, Germany, and Netherlands are clearly better than them. Others can certainly be argued but I don't know if it's definitive. Brazil, Argentina, France, etc have their problems too.

ETA: Forgot about Uruguay. ATM I'd say they should be above England.

i wouldn't really call it screwy.

it's a formula where results from the past four years are factored in (greater weight given to more recent years). england is a consistently good team. thus, they generally fair pretty well in the rankings.

it doesn't ever really accurately rank teams by their current ability, but the methodology isn't magic.

ETA: england is ranked 6th, now

the rankings suck

not many teams have proven they're better.

name 5 teams that have proven they're better excluding the obvious ones. (Spain,Netherlands,Germany,) You can probably add Uruguay to that list as well.

Their rankings are trash, that's widely known. Uruguay was like 18th before they won the tournament last week.

I've seen that cover with India in place of Iraq. Which is the actual cover?

Seriously wondering. I'm interested in buying that book, but I'd love to see justification for Iraq rising to the top. Even India seems like a reach.

Capable of beating does not equal better.

I see no reason to be think that England is definitely better than a team like Mexico. They may have an edge, but it certainly doesn't seem huge.
