Beckham's expressions were priceless as well.

Steve was great because we got to hear his predictions and reactions. I remember him and Lalas discussing England's performance. Lalas said something like "How about this. They're just not that good." Steve could barely comprehend that, but he couldn't really deny it, either.

Anyone with half a soccer brain doesn't put much stock in FIFA rankings.

No not really. I did think it wasn't a definite that they were going to win the group though. As I said I thought the U.S. had a chance.

I did, too. But that's because I thought Algeria would blow it.

Not really. There was an extended period of time when Notre Dame was the best.

Only way Algeria would blow it is if they changed formations. The three man backline they used was perfect for England's fairly standard 4-4-2.

Agreed. England isn't a top eight team all-time. Notre Dame certainly is. This could be fun. I'll start the rankings.

Soccer International Rankings All-Time:

1. Brasil
2. Italy
3. Germany
4. Uruguay
5. Argentina
6. Spain
7. France
8. Holland

College Football:

1. Alabama(VOMIT)
2. Oklahoma
3. Notre Dame
4. Michigan
5. USC(VOMIT)
6. Ohio State
7. Nebraska
8. Penn State

friendly's as well. Which aren't the be all end all but they still mean a little.

2007 copa america champions
top of conmebol wc 2010 qualifying
very well could've been a felipe melo brain away from the wc 2010 semis
quarterfinals in this copa america w/a team that is for all intents and purposes searching for an identity

sure, they're underachieving. underachieving for brasil in that they aren't blowing the world away

I'd put Germany over Italy and probably Argentina over Uruguay, but seems to be a good list. May be forgetting something.

Wrong board, but I feel obligated to say that I think Tennessee should be ahead of Penn State.

I am going off of World Cup wins and deep penetration(lulz)into the WC.

I think LSU should be ahead of UT.

FWIW I was at the game in Neyland against Notre Dame in like 1990/1991 and I haven't ever seen a better collection of future NFL talent on one field in my life.

I'm not old enough to remember, but this isn't the first time I've heard that about that game.

That's why I would have Germany higher. They've played in more finals than anyone, IIRC.

There were like 15 first round picks on the field.

If the Vols didn't blow it in the 2001 title game, the national championship game against Miami that season may have passed that.

Good list. It's so telling that so many English fans think their current NT is so obviously ahead of Italy and France when both those (who have also actually won a WC recently) looked better in EURO 2012 qualifying as well.

England has strong team but I'd if I had to bet on one of those 3 actually winning a WC or EURO in the near future it would be Italy and France, again.

I'm sure most people on this board would probably side with Germany over Italy but it's really just depends ultimately on whether you value more championships and head-to-head (Italy) over so many consistent top 4 finishes (Germany).

Germany is more consistently elite.
Italy has actually risen to the occasion to be champions more often.
