My dad just bought a Scott Meridian 8wt.

I'll be breaking it in for him day after tomorrow

I also am in possession of a new vessel.

I like that a lot.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like I'll be ordering some new hooks and tying material.

Have you tried many clouser minnows? Once I got them down I tied about 100 in various sizes and colors. Very easy tie when you get the hand of it

For you saltwater guys, I've got a few brands in mine and I need to make a decision soon so I can have everything ready for my Chandeleur trip in a month. Currently looking at Nautilus, Orvis, Taylor, Allen. Will be primarily for reds and specks. Still haven't made up my mind on a rod yet either, but have some good ideas of what I want with that.

Depends on $$$ you want to spend. Orvis has the Mirage and just came out with the new version of Hydros both are great. I own an Allen Kraken an it has been a good reel. Nautilus will be the most expensive but the best. Rod will matter more than the reel. Those are all good options that are listed.

Kraken is what I've been eyeing along with the Nautilus FWX. I'd like to keep it under about $400

No one makes a better reel for the money than Allen IMO

Heads up -

mrfc has good deal on Sage rods right now. $400 rod for $200

-------------

Take a look at Lamson reels Pogey. Seems they're more popular up north. The Litespeed is a great reel

---------

Ccard - I'll post some when I get home. I was planning on tying tonight. Might go for steelhead tomorrow since they're dropping back to Lake Ontario now. Maybe, just maybe I can salvage a terrible steelhead season.

Thinking about taking a trip. I'm located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Looking for fairly mountainous fly fishing within 12 hours or less. I think I can easily get to the Ozarks, and have been here before. I've also been to the kind of mountainous area in Northern Georgia (Ellijay).

I need some help on other possible destinations. I'm looking south for the weather, and I'm going to drive.

So this here is about 12 hours at 60 MPH:

What say you about a destination where it would be warmer(presumably), mountainous, picturesque, and where lodging and guides would be readily available?

I'm very open to the Great Smoky region.

Edit - Better radius map:

I would just do 13 hours and go fish in Colorado, but the Smokies would be fun too. I haven't been over there in years, but the option of fishing tailwaters in eastern TN along with streams in the Smokies is nice. The Watauga and South Holston are both good tailwaters from what I remember.

I have the nautilus CCF X2 6/8, so far it's been fantastic and would certainly recommend nautilus reels.
It has some serious stopping power and the drag is incredibly smooth.
The NVG are beasts but cost some $$$$.

Also have the Orvis Access IV, good little reel for the price. The drag isn't anywhere on the same level of the nautilus but is still pretty darn good.
I know a few people that have had trouble with Orvis reels...don't know about the new Hydros but a close relative had the old one and has had some trouble with his.

May also want to look at 3 tand fly reels. Seems to be a well made reel for the price.

Best suggestion...buy the best you can reasonably afford. No regrets that way.

Thank you. I'm pretty much down to the Allen Kraken or Nautilus FWX. Trying to keep my budget around 6-700 since this is all basically brand new to me. As for rods, any of yall familiar with the new Sage Motive?

Sage makes good rods. You won't be disappointed in the quality. The real question is whether you like the feel, so it would help if you could find one to throw.

Personally, for your first outfit and on a budget, I'd save yourself some money and get a BVK. It's a great quick shooting redfish rod.
