Yes you will need the original 4 pocket rod sleeve your rod came with. Don't want em banging around in there. If you do this take the rod (broken down of course) into the hardware store with you and make sure it fits the diameter pipe you're looking at. I went with rounded slip tips but the screw on ones would work too

Incidentally that one I took the pic of contains a TFO with the original green sleeve.

LINK

Link to Orvis tour.

In other news - steelhead fishing is pretty terrible this year. Numbers way down in lake Ontario tributaries. Last 3 times I went I've caught 2 total fish.

Looks like a good site. Some other sites I visited before I started tying my own were millers fly shop and bigyflyco

OB fly fishermen gurus...

If you had $300 to spend on a fly rod and reel, what would you pick?

TIA

What are you fishing for and what's your experience with a fly rod?

I probably won't enter this one since I don't do reds or saltwater in general. I will remind you that your fly line and backing gonna cost at least $50 though. Does this need to be included in the $300?

Advice that I have gotten is that you want to put more money into the rod than the reel.

Allen Alpha III reel is great for that purpose. Their rods aren't bad either.

No. $300 budget for rod and reel. Baits and line not included in that.

I think this is true for the most part. For redfish it's probably still true.

I have to play 10-15lb steelhead in the river on 6lb test tippet so the reel is the major player. Have a choppy drag = lost fish.

Based on videos from guys on here like bluechaos and others on youtube it looks like you can really horse a redfish with some strong line. If that's the case then I'd have priority in the rod knownig you'll often be casting in the wind. A crappy rod sucks to have in casting with wind.

I know a lot of guys here are TFO fans and I am one of them despite not being a saltwater guy. For the money I've been very happy with my TFO BVK which I have in a 5wt.

Look at st. Croix rio santo or TFO professional in 8wt. They have a moderate fast action which is good for getting the feel of casting and sufficient for reds in the marsh where most casts are fairly short. An 8 weight is a good all around redfish/salt rod. Very fast action rods are all the rage for saltwater, but while great for distance casting in the wind in experienced hands, aren't the best to learn on and usually are unnecessary for reds in the marsh.
For reels you want a large arbor anodized aluminum one with a sealed drag if possible or an old fashioned cork drag that's easy to maintain. Ll bean has a large arbor double L series for $150. Also take a look at Lamson waterworks reels or Reddington behemoth.
I would also recommend a line for redfish like rio redfish or scientific anglers mastery redfish. They have a shorter head so the rod loads easier with less line out.
Try to cast the rods before you buy if possible, but if you can't, just get one and Practice often and have fun. It can be frustrating at first but stock with it.

No problem. I'd also check out the la fly fishing site and forum and microskiff.com
Lots of great info from people way more knowledgeable than me.

Lightly used outfits are plentiful. A good way to go to get better gear for less. I went with TFO rod to start out and have been pleased. Allen and Lamson make good reels for an affordable price. Redington behemoth would be a good option as well.

December near Elijay, Georgia. A cold front had gone through, and the fishing was tough. Caught a very nice rainbow.
