Our club won the 08 Top Six on Toledo mainly reeling Zoom speed craws on top like a ribbit. Never had seen that, but I guess it was just something different and a little more finesse. A guide over there tipped us off to it.

Big bass fishing - MirroLure Top Dog
Smallmouth/ and smaller bass - Zara Puppy
I catch most my fish on rubber worms, but nothing beats a top water smash!

Yeah we've caught a lot of fish like that out there. Sometimes they won't bite a Ribbit, and they just want something smaller. An ultravibe speed worm is good like this, too.

I love a rogue in February/March. I just don't consider it top water because it dives.

Ive never had much luck with topwater, what are your ideal conditions, locales for a topwater lure?

For me, it starts in late April. Banks, pad edges, over ridges or for schoolies. Best before the sun gets too high and when it's about to set.

This is when I have the most luck with topwater as well. I usually do better on days that aren't too windy as well.

I only use topwater first thing in the morning like dawn or within 30 minutes of sunset. After about an hour of sunlight, I don't get the same amount of bites it seems.
For sure. I hate fishing them with any wind at all.

I don't have one go to too water bait. It is completely determined by the conditions I'm fishing.
One of the best days I've ever had fishing top water was during a cicada hatch 20 yrs ago. I was using a fly rod with a deer hair popper I had made. I caught 30-40 fish with the biggest being around 4.5lbs and a bunch in the 2-3lbs range.
