Food for thought:

Bolt-thrust force for AR firing M855 ammo and proper lubrication: ~3000lbf

Bolt-thrust force for AR firing M855 ammo and excessive lubrication that contacts cartridges and chamber: ~6000lbf

It follows suit that when ARDEC tests an M4 they regularly get through the 6000 round test on the original bolt and a lot of others are breaking bolts at 2k - 4k rounds then it's probably the lubrication technique. So many are convinced that you have to soak the BCG to get an AR to run reliably and that contradicts every study done on these rifles with the exception of some heavy dust chamber tests.

I'm shopping for an optic for the DD M4A1 I recently got. I'd like to go with an Acog, but I can't help but think that should I ever need it given the fact that I live in an urban environment (or for home defense) a 4x scope isn't going to be the best option. So I'm also considering Eotech and Aimpoint, although I do tend to like the Eotech over the Aimpoint.

Any thoughts? How good is the Acog with target acquisition at close to medium range? I've also considered getting an Eotech and slapping a 3x magnifier on it for close and medium range targets, but I'm not sure how good of a setup that is.

Another thought is to just mount an Acog on my M4A1 and eventually get something like an Eotech when I pick up an SBR, AR pistol with the Sig brace, etc.

Admittedly I have more concentrated experience with M16A1 than any other platform, but "soaking" may be too strong. My BCT rifle (and it was fairly shot out, no question) ran best "wet" (just short of oozing), and would have problems when it dried out - particularly extraction.

This is counter-intuitive to most of my experience. Typically, if you "over lube", that draws dust in like a maget. Now - dry and dusty is the worst of everything, but light-to-medium CLP yielded my best results for reliability through about 30,000 rounds over 26 years, including about half of that being blanks.

If you do the RMR on top, you need to break the cheek weld. Offset RMR or Aimpoint is a better option.

Probably because it had problems else where that all that lubricant masked over.

In extreme dust the excess lubricant does help with extraction problems, more so in the M4's and M249 SAWS which are more dust-problem prone than the M16A2/A4's. Overall reliability in more typical conditions is better with proper lubrication as per official guidance.

Well you are better off with a handgun or shotgun since either could be had for the cost of the optics + change leftover for ammo and range fees. ACOG can work close up with both eyes open as the reticle will superimpose and act like a red dot sight. It's not comfortable and takes practice though. EOTech or Aimpoint will work very well to about 300m so I'm not sure why a magnifier is needed for even closer targets.

Have the handguns covered, still have a good shotgun on my "to buy" list. I only mentioned the AR for home defense in the event something happened and I was forced to use it. I appreciate the advice.
