Then you might want to read this. It's a barrel erosion study from the tests of the M16 just prior to major service adoption. If anyone ever wondered why the military only chrome plates the bore and chamber and not the entire bolt and bolt carrier there is some insight around Page 2 I think.

Nice link. Interesting stuff.

Going through a lot of old files and reports that document the history of the M16. Seems that even though ball powder caused somewhat more fouling (though over lubrication contributed to the priblems too) the choice was made because the ball powder was the only consistent performing propellant that could be furnished en masse. Dupont could not provide IMR powders that met performance standards consistantly from lot to lot and many of those lots failed the 1000 round fouling tests too.

I use that extractor setup and 1 piece gas rings in both my AR's. The Navy and the Air Force have done a lot of research into what actually makes the AR run.

Clames, you got links to these other reports?

They majority are at that DTIC site. Have to search for them. I'll post links as I find them.

no love for the new build?
i thought you buttfrickers would appreciate me not slapping FDE shite all over one finally.

Pretty much covers the early development and adoption history of the M16 dated 1 JUNE 1968.

I don't know if the index of modifications Colt requested during production of the early M16's is in this document but I'll post that one too. What is interesting in it is some of the material changes that were made and have become sacrosanct as "Mil-Spec" today where actually justified on the basis that they don't significantly impact the designed performance and durability in what was originally contracted. Some changes where asked for simply to give flexibility in material selection (bolt carrier and barrel extension material) while some offered performance improvements at no additional or even less cost (Parkerizing substituted for electrolytic plating (nickel/chrome)).

In the first report you posted didn't it point out that case hardened 8620 carriers were better than other options, and that chrome plating build up in the corners of the bolts led to failures, so magphos was better?
Both of those seem to be advantageous. I'd like to see the reasoning behind Carpenter 158 v regular ol' 9310...or phos parts vs nitrided (wouldn't have the same buildup issues as other coatings).

First real mod should be the Geissle Super Sabra trigger pack. Best $350 upgrade for that gun.

Thanks, I'm going to look into it. Trigger is definitely shite.

I shoot at Nicks in Gramercy if you're in the Nola / BR area.

Carburized carriers didn't have wear problems in the bolt chamber that through-hardened carriers did. That was before Colt hard-chrome plated that part of the carrier though. Wear resistance and durability were cited as reasons for the switch to Parco-lubrite from electrolized plating. Part of that durability comes from the required shot-peening of the parts prior to coating. I haven't found much on the decision to use C158 for the bolt vs other materials though there was a request to drop the RC hardness of the bolt from 60-61 down to 57-58 which resulted in a 30% increase in the average number of rounds before failure.

Griffin M4SD II flash-comp.
Have this same one on two of mine and love it.
Was going to go with a Bravo Mod 1.0 but after shooting the Griffin I'll just stick with it.
And FTR, if anyone tries to tell me you can't feel the difference a good comp makes I'll tell them to stick it.
It's all about getting that dot back on target ASAP.
