Growing up I have always used Spinning, and all the rods I have now or either Spinning or cane pole (My grandparents with alzheimer's would like to sit at the lake with cane poles..) I have only used the one with the button as a kid and I think we have one that the girls use with the button. In fact I thought that style was just a beginner reel.
I want to get into it more, and I guess was asking what is the difference between reel and if I only ever fish for Specks and Reds and Sheepsheads, do I need anything else besides a Spin Cast. My current is a $50 rod and reel combo I got at Cabela's.

I haven't heard of anyone older than 6 years old using a Spin cast reel. Try learning a spinning reel, they aren't that hard

Spinning reel = throw the lure somewhere
Baitcaster = place the lure somewhere

My difference is accuracy

For general saltwater fishing, get yourself a spinning reel with a cheat lever (I think some brands call it auto cast).

It's sheepshead. Unless you're from da parish, then it's sheephead.

You don't need that trigger bullshite. Just get a Shimano Symetre with a medium action spinning rod. Falcon or St. Croix. Someone at the store will be able to help you pair a rod with it.

Bourgs- that's a fine eating fish. Better than redfish is done same day, in my opinion. Give it a whirl.

Obviously, no experienced fisherman "needs" that trigger bullshite. But if you have an inexperienced noob who has only used a push-button spin cast reel, it certainly would make the transition easier.

FIFY

You can use light tackle inshore so you can pretty much get away with anything. My wife uses a Zebco spin cast and can outfish me. Spin cast for her = more time fishing. If she had to deal with bird nests and wind knots, she wouldnt fish.

I prefer light spin tackle. The lighter spin reels and light action rods give near baitcasting accuracy in casting. I use 2000 and 3000 series spin reels with braid and love it.

It's hardly a transition. Pulling the trigger and using your finger are not much different. And neither is the same as pushing a button. A trigger just adds cost to the reel and leaves more stuff to break.

Spinning reel, my friend.

Decide your budget, tell the guy at the store your budget and trout/red.

I prefer shimano reels, st croix rods 7' medium fast action, and 30# braided line.

In general, the more you spend, the more you will like it. Try not to go below $150 if you can. $300 more better tho! (180/reel, 120/rod)

It's Christmas time!

A light or medium weight spinning rod-n-reel is all you need for inshore specs and reds.

I had a great uncle that used huge cane pole for spec and red fishing. My dad had a friend from some where in the caribean that casted hook and line from a coke bottle and wound it back up by hand.

But a high quality light spinning rod n reel like Penn or Shimano is a great all around fishing pole.

ETA: a 7' rod is the best legnth.
