Not a smart decision? That cannot be supported. Like, at all.

Why would a less forgiving caliber be prefered for an unexperienced hunter?
I don't even know what this means. Look, I'm done with you once you make a pronouncemnt. it's amazing the vast amount of expertise you have at your age. I yield.

Who is going to shoot a 80 or 100 grain bullet out of a 7mm-08 for hunting?

I think the OP would be best served by a .308 but the 7mm-08 is a far better hunting round than a .243 from my experience with both cartridges. On paper the 243 is outclassed in every category except Muzzle Velocity, but the crap BC makes it not as good downrange- which is not what either one of these rifles are designed for.

I have pretty substantial experience with stuff like this. I could support that claim all day if i had the time.

7MM-08. That is my main hunting caliber. Same case as a .243 and .308 just necked to a 7mm bullet. I have seen many deer hit not so good with a .243 and get away. You can get it in 130-140 gr. bullets. remington also makes low recoil loads for it.

That just isn't a valid statement. I know of deer hit poorly with a .300 mag and not be found.

To the OP:

I think dimensions of said wife are required for more accurate suggestions. Where did he go?

I HATE the .243 so much it isnt funny. It keeps my blood dog busy with hits that shouldnt have required a dog.

Looks like he bolted as soon as he asked the question.

My brother has one and with good shots it isn't bad. We've had to track most of my other brothers deer shot with a .270 farther than his.

No offense but your brother is a horrible shot then.

ETA: what kind of bullets does he shoot?

This should never happen. What bullet is he shooting out of the .270?

They were poor shots, he's gotten better. And that was when we were still shooting winchester supreme ballistic tip 130gr. Hasn't happened since we switched to 150gr core lokt.

7mm08

I have my 8 year old placing nice shots 100 yards away. No recoil whatsoever.

My best friend and brother in law use 7mm08 for their kids as well....furthest any deer traveled was 10 yards after the shot.

Not saying it isnt adequate, but it is not forgiving. I have no problems with adults using it. I cant stand to see people buy it for their kids. Ive seen some weenie arse kids shoot a 7mm-08 with no problems at all.

Eta: point being, the percieved recoil difference in the two is nil, so why short-change your kid/wife the extra killing power?
