I agree. Best shots I've put on deer with the ballistic tips the deer still went at least 40 yards. Since I switched I shot 2 deer, and neither took another step. And the shots were less than optimal.

Great round. That's what I shot out of mine before it was stolen.

A guy who hunts with us shoots ballistic silvertips out of his aught-6. Lots of work for hoss. Hes a horrible shot though, couldnt drop deer if he was shooting exploding bullets out of a 338 lapua.

I shot several with ballistics trying them out and I will never make that mistake again. Perfect shots would turn into nightmare tracking.

My brother's problem was that his scope had gotten jarred and he never bothered checking it. So I was off right by 4 inches, and he shot all of his early deer while they were moving. Mix that with ballistic tips, and it kinda sucked

Obvious question is obvious.

Why all the debate regarding fitting calibers to people that obviously are not prepared to harvest an animal.

I have an uncle in Tensas parish who has killed more deer than all in this thread combined. He switched from a 30-06 to a 243 after numerous poor shots. He felt he had developed a problem with recoil. He has had great results.

But how bout this. How bout we quit putting centerfire rifles in the hands of women and children that are obviously not ready.

End rant.

Damn he asks a question and bolts.

Sorry was at lunch. Wife weighs about 120lbs, and recoil would be our biggest concern. She is scared of the scope. So i would need something with the least recoil but still be effective for killing deer.

The ballistic silvertips are shite. I used them one year and went back to the core-lokts.

Even after you decide what Caliber to get she needs to handle some guns to see what fits her best. A proper fitting gun is a must.

7mm08

I have my 8 year old placing nice shots 100 yards away. No recoil whatsoever.

My best friend and brother in law use 7mm08 for their kids as well....furthest any deer traveled was 10 yards after the shot.

Seems like the majority is pointing to the 7mm-08. Next question, what are yalls thoughts on the cheap Remington bolt actions 770? I believe? or the Weatherby Vanguards? Don't want to spend $1000 on a gun to be used once or twice a year.

LOL....Several Thousand Deer????

My father cleared a great deal of Lake Mary in the 60s and 70s and had a permit by MS Game and Fish to kill as many as he could....We are talking Whitetails in the Thousands.....

Are you my cousin?

Why not a semi auto? Effectively reduce recoil, without splitting hairs on caliber.

I have an old .308 model 100 that basically has not recoil. Deer killing machine.

Plus, if she gut shoots the first shot, she can pop one through both hams as it is getting away.

I went through this dilemma as well. I think if you pick up a 770 and an S2 Weatherby Vanguard...the decision will be easy. I haven't handled a Savage- and it should get some interest, but I prefer the Weatherby at $400. to the Rem 770 at $339. The difference is the Rem is ready to hunt with scope and rings, just needs sighting in. The 770 bolt is loose, and the tolerances don't seem to be that tight. But it is a $339 gun.
