Currently have all 30.06s and .300 Win Mags for deer hunting. Needing some suggestions on a smaller caliber for wife. I'm leaning towards the .243 or the 7mm-08. Thoughts/suggestions.. I won neither of those calibers.

7mm-08 hands down. Anything else is just not a smart decision IMO.

Justify the .243 over the 7mm-08. You cant do it.

Correct.

Bullet Diameter, Bullet Weight, Ballistic Coefficient, Energy and Ft/sec (if shooting comparable wt bullets): favors 7mm-08

When I hunt big game, there are two questions I always ask myself.
1. How big is game?
2. How fast?

This should help you in determing your caliber.

Is that what this is about? I think not. But since you asked,

It's for a female. recoil is a consideration.

243 = 5
.260 = 7
7-08 = 9
.308 = 10

.243 is going to have a highe BC, and will kill every deer just as dead as the 7mm-08.

BOOOOOOM!

No way I`m buying a .243. if someone else wants it then good for them. The recoil is not enough of a diff. IMO. My wife is about 5` 8" and 125 lbs and she has a .270wsm and loves it. If his wife practices like anyone should their is no reason she could not be perfectly fine with a 7mm-08.

Ive shot every one of those calibers. With a rifle that fits, the recoil difference is not noticable with any of those except the .308 when using some heavy bullets. You can buy some hard kicking .308 rounds. You can also make a .243 painful to shoot with a poorly fitting rifle.

The .243 is also not as good at killing deer quickly as the 7mm-08. It just is not a smart decision for an unexperienced hunter.

Eta: and i take no stock in numbers with no units.

For the 7mm-08: 0.485 BC. Nosler Ballistic Tip. 140 gr.

For the 243: 0.43 BC. Sierra Game King. BTSP. 100 gr. (this is the only .243 bullet with a BC above 0.4 All of the 7mm-08 bullets have a BC above 4 except the Barnes Triple shock and it is 0.394.

The wound channel is significantly greater for a 7mm-08 over a 243 as well. .284 vs .243

How is that stupid? Why would a less forgiving caliber be prefered for an unexperienced hunter?

Was just going apples to apples:

quote:

Note that with bullets of the same weight and style, such as the 100 grain .243" and .257" bullets or the 150 grain .311" and .323" bullets, the smaller diameter bullet always has the superior BC due to its better sectional density.

.243, .25-06, 7mm-08

Any of these would be a very good round for a woman.
