Also, they need to be mentally stimulated and being out and about is perfect for that. They want tasks to do and respond well when given one are able to complete it.

ETA - One thing more about GSD's....they shed small poodles daily if not brushed every now and then...

My 7 month GSP is a freaking handful. He's very high energy. I have not neutered him but I am thinking about it. He comes from a great bloodline so that's my hesitation. I think a GSP would be great off the leash in the woods. In neighborhood my GSP runs very well with the leash as well. Dog park is essential for him right now...and for me. Granted my perspective is not as sharp as others since this is my first dog, but I've lived with a fullgrown GSP before (roommates dog). I sure do hope he calms down a little. He can wear my patience at times.

He is a great dog. Does not bark much right now. Just very needy and high maintenance. Would not dare leave him inside free roaming.

Eta: I think my post came off as negative. Let me set the record straight: he is incredibly intelligent and physically capable. Loves all dogs and all people. I love my GSP

Believe it or not my male Basset will run a mile with me. He doesn't do well longer than that, but he'll kick it for that mile leading me and keeping the leash tight.

Cutting a GSP will not slow him down one bit. Might keep him from escaping and chasing tail though.

to the OP... i think a GSP is great choice for a runner. All they want to do is run. I dont buy that they have problems in the cold. People duck hunt with them in Canada. A big male should have no problem with a light pack.

As far as bringing up a pup... just remember one rule... a tired GSP is a good GSP.

Good idea, it's nice for the other hikers and the last thing you want is having the dog to run up ahead and running back to you with a cougar behind it.

Doubtful if you ever have an encounter but just remember you're going to be in cougar territory. Some precautions should be taken.

Any working breed dog will outlast you in any type of physical activity. Just get what ya like. A blackmouth cur would be a good one to look at.

The best for what you are looking for is a rescued pit bull. I got 2 myself.

Didn't read all the post but look into border collies or austrailian shepards. All of them that I have known were very durable and will run forever.

Border collies are more energetic of the two but with daily exercise they won't have bottled up energy at the end of the day.

And the smaller the dog you get the smaller the amount of food and water he will need to carry. Big dog needs more food than small dog.

I had a german shepard. Great dog. She would keep up with the horses for 10 mile rides but if I did that daily she would start to limp from hip problems. I don't think they are made to go miles and miles every day. Just my experience.
