I'm going to piggy back on this since I also considered this. I have about 3k acres and thought about doing cattle on some. The only problem is that it is in Vicksburg, MS and I live in Central, LA. Could I make enough if I hired somebody to tend to them?

zero. However, my father and aunt who live there now raised cattle for a long time.

Don't listen to these cats. My father has had registered Brangus cattle for the last 30 years and it provides him a nice supplemental income. Plus, you get the best grass feed beef ever.

He has 50 head +/- a few

if you go with sheep or goats make damn sure and get a livestock guardian dog. no matter how good your fence is, if a predator wants to get in they will. I just lost at least 1000 bucks worth of sheep because of some stupid stray dogs.

The phrase "at first" can be disregarded. Do it to have fun and be sure you have the time to commit. Don't expect to make money...ever...in the long run.

black baldy steer calves

That was the last thing we were running before we had to sell last of them of when the place got sold. My uncle kept is bull and is thinking about getting some more and producing some tiger stripes which is an optimum cross for the black baldies if im not mistaking.

Hoping to be starting my own small herd in 3-5 years.

Is he cow/calf or a grower operation?

I've always liked the bramah and hereford cross which gives you the f1 (first cross) tiger strips or Brafords.

Then run and Angus bull on them so you get a 1/2 angus, 1/4 brahmah, and 1/4 hereford. Sell those calves for meat...

You get something like this with a little ear on him...

Yea with 50 head its tough to do more than break even over the long run with a calf/cow.

Cow/calf.

Every spring he sales his calves and saves a few to fatten up for the butcher and the best couple(1-3) to sale to people that show.

Is that similar to a beef master? I saw those cows in Texas and they are gigantic.

You could always look into getting a really good registered cow, some f1 tiger stripes cows, do some embryo transfer from the registered cow and get several really good calves off her every year.

Those are their own seperate breed.

But if I'm not mistaken, it was developed by crossing hereford, Zebu (Very similar to brahmah) and shorthorns.

do some embryo transfer

That's a big deal in the longhorn business. They are not meat cattle, but every few years a bull or cow comes along that just shatters previous known avg. measurments for total tip to tip. Some of those cows sell for $30,0000 or more.

People who are big in the business will flush (collect embryos) from the mating of the best of the best and transfer them to dairy cross cows for their good milking abilities. So you end up with good milking cheap mama cows and high dollar longhorn calves.

Right now these are two of the widest longhorns in the industry...

and

It's not a coincidence... Thats a mother and son.

I saw a Angus go for 100k once, she was being bought for just this purpose. Not saying OP could make that much money, but definitely something you could do with just 15 acres that has good potential.
