Even of you thought it was a deer... What the hell were you aiming at?! Just shooting and hoping to kill it? That's pure retardation!

Oh, I am definitely not a liberal tree hugger. I was very shocked at myself and confused at first. It happened on a Friday evening, and I went to that party on Saturday during the day. After talking about it with a few guys there. Most had the same experience. Some took shots, some didn't. So, I didn't feel too bad afterward.

I was 100% sure I was shooting at a deer. As we all know, a big buck is going to leave a path. Tear up the ground. Blood, fur, something will be left behind. But couldn't find anything.

Forgot to add this...
Saturday evening, I hunted the same exact spot, until dark and didn't see what I seen when I shot on Friday.

My main question was "could my eyes deceive me that much?"

It wasn't like I was seeing rabbits or squirrels.

I think everyone has had their minds play tricks on them in the early morning hours before good visibility only to find out what they thought they were seeing was a stick, tree, bush, or other animal.

However, only a complete dunce would consider pulling the trigger on such an object. The fact that you discussed this with what apparently turned out to be other less than intellegent individuals and then found comfort in your actions is appauling. You screwed up big time and yet you failed to learn from the incident.

You should stop hunting. Seriously.

fur

Never heard a 30 year hunter refer to hide or hair as fur when referring to deer.

I thought the same exact thing.

Also any experienced hunter would know that wehn you shoot a deer it is possible for not a trace of sign within 20 yards that the deer was even there if you have bad shot placement.

I was on a hunt in West Texas one time, first evening of the the 3day hunt, theres a feeder roughly 100yrds away. Just as its getting into those twilight minutes I can see a deer at the feeder. There's enough light to see the shining massive rack on this buck but thats about it other than a faint outline of a deer body. The only thing I can see through my scope is these antlers. I can clearly tell that the deer is broadside. I can guess where the vitals are based off of where his head is and the outline that I can barely see, but I didnt pull the trigger. I wasn't 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, sure that it was a deer and sure of my shot placement. This would have been the biggest deer I'd ever killed or would've killed, but I didnt pull the trigger. See the pattern here.

Really? Once its skinned, I refer to it as hide or fur, and never as hair.

They're called fur traders, not hair traders

Spent about 2 hours looking for the deer. There was nothing. No signs

I know these must be fairly common in low light hunting situations, but has anyone ever fired at one of them? or am I the only dumbass?

I have had my eyes plays tricks on me, yes. But have I ever come close to pull the trigger? NO

If I did that I would be going to the doctor the next day to get my head checked. That is scary if you honestly thought it was a deer, and it is even more scary if you pulled the trigger on a silhouette.

when im not 100% about something i can assure you the last thought in my mind is "damn i better get a shot off!". I usually grab my binoculars and make 100% confirmation of my target before i ever pic up my gun.

Contributing factors
1. ground blind
2. 20-30 yard distance
3. 30/30 no scope
4. clear food plot at edge of woods
5. seated facing south, shooting towards the east
6. Shot was well within legal shooting times
You didn't list your own problem...eatin' up with dumbass Damn, do you know just how stupidly life-threatening that is????
