Maybe you just missed.
For the other responses...It wasn't friggen dark. I was NOT shooting at a black blob.
The whole thing reminds me of one of my first deer hunts when I was a child. We were running dogs in Union Parish, and I had a whole herd of deer cross in front of me. It was like I was in a cartoon. Seemed unreal at the time.
I'm going back this weekend to do another search. I hope I missed the damn thing. This would be by far the biggest buck I ever killed. The rack was a good 6 inches outside the ears.

My eyes always play tricks on me. I can make a low lying limb look like fricking Buckzilla so I get your part on that.
However, I have never or would never pull the trigger unless I knew for sure it was what I was hunting for. Thats how accidents happen.
Sad story, did a case in a Business Law class where a man took his friend and 8 year old son deer hunting for the first time. Gave the kid a .30-06 and put him in a box stand on a pipeline and showed him where the deer usually come out. Guy shoots and is tracking his deer in tan coveralls and a white tee and is bending over walking from one tree line to the next in between the pipeline. Kid saw tan and white underbelly and pulled the trigger - shot the guy in the head at about 300 yds. Kids life was ruined because of it.
Off topic and not same situation but just some food for thought. And I don't remember all the details but that is pretty close, maybe someone else knows it better.

I hope this means you were hunting in Area 1 or 6 (the only areas open for non-primitive firearms last weekend. If this is correct, I'm glad because it means you aren't hunting around me.
In all honesty, if you told that story at our club, you would be voted out immediately.

On my phone so the quality may be bad but I don't even see a rack on the deer to the far right?

Of a deer? Thanks...I thought all you saw was a rack and you shot where the body should've been so how do you know the size of the deer?
Not knocking your story or anything (but a hunter with 30 years should know better) because this isn't the OT but forreals man that was fricking stupid of you to actually shoot. Thank God no one was injured and I hope you won't do that again...
Edit: I read where you saw the shadow of the deer each time, my mistake.

Ok so I must have skipped something: you saw the entire deer and rack and you shot but it may have been a hallucination? I thought this was because you thought it was a deer but weren't sure and you shot?
No advice then, you must have just missed it.

Sometimes temperature inversions cause images to be distorted.
Fata Morgana
This is a mountain range
Sometimes cities or towns far away appear to people who wouldn't otherwise see them due to the bending of the light. It can also make other objects like trees or shrubs distorted and can resemble deer. When I was hunting near Logansport La once during an inversion a natural gass "christmas tree" looked like a deer.
