Evening hunt hallucinations
Posted by zaychik on 1/24/11 at 7:46 am00
I know these must be fairly common in low light hunting situations, but has anyone ever fired at one of them? or am I the only dumbass?
Contributing factors
1. ground blind
2. 20-30 yard distance
3. 30/30 no scope
4. clear food plot at edge of woods
5. seated facing south, shooting towards the east
6. Shot was well within legal shooting times
I was ground blind hunting this weekend and I heard some noise coming from my left. I slowly turned my head that way and spot a huge "rack" about 30 yards out and it looks like it is moving up and down. I looked away to sort of reset my eyes, then looked back again. This time, I seen the rack again, it looked like it was coming towards me, then did a 180. I turned away one more time, then found it again, this time the rack turned broadside, so I took the shot. Also, the entire time I was seeing a silhouette of a deer body.
ETA..Just to clarify. This is the exact food plot. I was on the right (yellow lines) and the deer was on the left (orange). Basically a shot from home plate to pitchers mound.
And the deer on the far right is about what I was looking at (except had huge rack).

ummm, no.
i don't shoot at anything unless i can see it clearly, know exactly what it is, how far away it is, which direction it's moving, etc..
i would recommend getting a scope on your 30/30 or carrying some binoculars with you.

UM, yeah. What R2R said.
You need to invest in some good optics.

quote:yeah, I know. Friggen embarrassing. I have been an avid hunter for 30 plus years, and this is the first time something like that has happened.

I had binos with me, but didn't take them out of the bag because my longest shot was maybe 40 yards or so.

If you have to do this.. I don't care if it's legal shooting hours or not, you shouldn't even consider taking a shot.
You should never take a shot unless you are positive that it can be a good one. It's not fair to the animal and it's unsafe.

I'm not sure what there is to brag about.

quote:Look, I honestly apologize if I read you and your post wrong. But, looking at it, it seems that only a liberal tree hugger would say something about taking a shot, when he wasn't sure, just for the reaction. 1st.. how in the hell could you allow that act of shooting a weapon at something that you were not 100% sure of to happen..2.. how in the hell could you even talk about it, if it were true? I would still be trembling, and wondering about my sanity, etc. etc.., not posting it on a message board...
our reaction
