we were on a trip w one of tomenys boats years ago caught a 50lb lemonfish - the deckhands traded it for shrimp w a shrimp boat we were fishing by -
they kept the shrimp..
used to go on two trips a year w tomeny...
told him why we would never go back and didn't

I've never seen that. We've given he captain and mate some of the dish before but that was because we had a great day and the mate cleaned all our fish on the dock. We had the ziplocs and cooler of ice. Mostly filled it up and told him to take what he wanted because we had way too much. We just wanted some snapper to grill that night and the jack and grouper we caught. The mate got some fresh snapper and some trigger and flounder.

I'd be more concerned that's all I caught was Sheepheads.
You can walk on the jetties and catch that from the bank.

I'm pretty sure your company paid for those fish. Don't know why he thought they were his

I caught a 65lb Cobia/Ling/Lemonfish out of Destin one time, and we gave the Captain a nice cut off of it. It was by choice though. He remembered us from then on and would go out of his way to make sure we had good trips when we went out with him. I've never heard of a charter captain confiscating his customers' catch. Seems like a good way to go broke.

Goes to show u that any idiot can get a "Captains" license. A few reds and sheepshead? I hope u come back and at least say the water was choc milk/ rough or something to excuse that poor catch
glad u took the high road on it all. I surely wouldn't use him again
But yeah y'all got screwed over

Never had that happen, but they would get no tip from me and slammed in reviews. Charters cost a lot fo money, you are paying to fish and expect to keep those fish.

growing up we always threw sheephead's back. My friend's dad was a Challmation and he had a term for them I can't say here. it was *****fish.
I still have never caught and kept one. But have paid $20+ in restaurants to eat it.

Never been on a charter where a guide kept any fish. I even offered to give a share one time at Sweetwater, (Delacroix), Jack Payne. He politely refused, said he ate plenty enough fish.
Went to Belize this year and were going to catch and release most of what we caught, except for enough for us to take to the hotel and have them cook for us.
I asked the guide if he wanted the fish when we started catching and he said he liked to eat a few and also share with the local Law Enforcement. I laughed cuz the way it sounded, it was like expected!
We kept a couple nice mangroves for supper and he got the barracuda and makeral.
BTW, they made some Spanish Makeral ceviche sp? right on the dock, that I really enjoyed, believe it or not.

Years ago when I lived in hawaii as a kid there was a charter guy we fished on that sold some of the fish at a commercial market. He was upfront and this was well known at the time of booking the trip. It was odd but it was one of his methods for keeping his prices lower than most and that's part of the reason my dad booked him. If you caught multiple little yellowfin you'd only keep 1 for instance and he'd sell the rest. If you only caught 1 big yellowfin he'd sell that. I don't think this was abnormal there but it was awhile ago.
But to the OP, that should of been known and clear in the beginning. There is no way that guy was selling sheepshead or reds, he just screwed you it sounds like.

A lot of business's come down to New Orleans and book a trip fishing. There may be guys on the boat that aren't from here and don't want the hassle of bringing the fish back. Most charters somewhat expect that with out of town business trips.
But even then, it should be assumed you're taking all the fish, unless you say you don't want to.

that whole thing is screwy. Are you saying he kept them to feed another group that you were not affiliated with?
The only thing I've seen even close is a charter captain that is of the opinion that his customers do not get to count him towards their limits. I.e. 3 customers = 75 trout, because the guide is not fishing. I went with this guide once, and we fished till we caught 5 over the limit because he wanted to take some to his wife. I was cool with that because he is an awesome guide and we limited out on trout.
