Bout damn time someone got the right answer. Savage.

Not really, but here is (what I think) is a funny story. When I was 15 (15 years ago) I got my first deer rifle. A Savage 30-06 with scope from Walmart for $200. The thing has always been almost impossible to shoot. If they were trying to build a rifle that could actually kill a shooter with recoil, this would be it. So, just for kicks, I decided to see if I could do anything else with it a few months ago. I bought a Hogue replacement stock for about $100. Took about 20 minutes to replace, and I swear, it's a whole new weapon. Crazy part to me, was how much one of these "super cheap" guns actually cost new now.

They aren't do cheap anymore. They make a pretty damn good rifle these days. Accutrigger is the tits. My dad has the weather warrior in .270 and it's a joy to shoot. I've got one in .270 as well, but it was before accustock, and I still really like it

Not a single mention of the 7mm08 after 3 pages. Folks need to look at the ballistics charts.

Something in .308, 30-06, or .270

Best ammo selection and easiest to find ammo for. Every rifle made is offered in at least one of those. None are overkill. All are adequate for elk if you ever get that opportunity.

Eta: find a rifle you like, and get one of those calibers.

Which rifle for deer hunting is like pissing in the wind. You just don't do shite like that.

What is the most importance thing about picking the right rifle is how it fits the shooter and were he/she would be using it as in what type of woods or long range shooting. That said, I use a .270. I found it can take out a deer at 10 yards or 350 yards with no problem.

while that is a bad arse gun, and i would definitely own it, i'd probably snicker if you broke that out at the deer camp.
