Remington Model 700 30-06

Would talk a whole helluva lot for me to change my opinion on this.

My dad dropped a nice 8pt at 253yds and I dropped a yearling (oops) at 203yds (but makes a better case for the bolt and caliber IMO that I could easily hit a small target at that distance)

.270,30-06,7mm-08,25-06 or some of the most popular deer rifles. I wouldn`t rec. a 300. Win. Mag or similiar if you`re not use to shooting.

I also left out .243 intentionally

I'm not much of a deer hunter as my preferred hunting is the feather sort as is yours but a .308 is a very good all around caliber. It is just a shortened .30-06 and the ballistics are reasonably close. .270 is also a great caliber.

My other deer rifle is a .257 Weatherby. It is fast and flat and will drop a deer in its tracks.

How far are your usual shots? 200 yards or less, .444. Can't go wrong with 270 or 30-06

Im not sure why the .243 is being hated on. If you're a good shot, you can put a deer on the ground at greater distances than some of your heavier caliber. I think .270 or .280 are your best all around calibers, but don't overlook a .243
