I was at Tallow Creek one day, and this goofy looking guy shows up. He pulls out his AR15 with a UTG scope, and puts on his Beats by Dre headphones as his ear pro. After firing about 20 rounds at 100 he realizes his scope is junk. I look over and this dude has removed his scope and is firing his AR at 100 yards with ZERO sights. By zero I mean he had a flat top AR with no front sight post.

I am not really crazy about going anywhere that all the tacticool people hang out. I am much happier at clays places where it is pretty easy to see the people who shoot from the ones who don't.

Anyone know Riverside Skeet Lodge on Hwy 16 allow any other type of shooting for members or just sporting clays?

If it is called the skeet lodge then I am willing to bet that they mainly practice the skeet discipline which means they most likely have five stand also and if you are lucky they will have a sporting clays course.

well i assumed they would have typical clay setups... i ask because i know hunter's run has a pistol/rifle range for members. was wondering if anyone know if riverside was similar

Sporting clays is pretty expensive to set up along with the fact that you need the land so if there was one they didn't have then it would probably be sporting clays unless it says sporting clays in the name or description then it is a say bet they won't have a sporting clays set up. Skeet is still a blast though.

Indoor ranges suck. That one in BR sucks really hard.
Outdoor ranges are a bit better, but even at HI you better watch your 6.

AZ has the best outdoor ranges out of any state I've been too and it's not even close.

I highly recommend avoiding on weekends. Weekdays are much less crowded.

You need to put your truck in 4wd just to get to the range, and you better be wearing hip boots to go check your targets. The crazy thing is people keep going, and it's the most expensive range around at $10.00 a person per hour. They put absolutely $0.00 back into it and it shows real bad.

Turcott is pretty safe. The few times a range officer is not out there, we police it pretty well.

You Raaaaaaaaaaang?
Public ranges with little to no supervision are as safe as YOU allow them to be. Like we say at Honey Island, we're out there to help ensure everyone is being safe, but it's just as much the shooter's responsibility to ensure that also. ANYONE can call a cease fire at any time.
What causes the issue is no one wants to be "that guy". Also, not everyone feels comfortable approaching another guy WITH A GUN IN HIS HAND! It can make for a pretty hairy situation.
This is why sometimes we're deemed to be "safety Nazi's" at Honey Island, but I guaranty you if you asked everyone leaving the property at the end of the day they'd choose safety over extra holes in their body anytime!

Yes. People are ignorant (newbies), people are complacent (veterans) and all in between. And the more people you have a round, the more likely you will see some scary stuff.
Scariest thing I witnessed at a public range:
Group of four guys shooting (100yds) off of two benches on the far left. I am on the third bench. the fourth bench is far right and you cannot see the 100yrd targets for the 25yrd barrier. An older gentleman walks up and sets up on that last bench available. About that time, the foursome let's myself and the other fellow know they are going to set new targets at the 50 and 100. New guy also puts out a target at 25. Everyone returns and the foursome start dicking around with the one gun that they can't seem to get on target. About that time, new guy says "fire in the hole" and lets one fly... Only three dudes messing with the gun. The fourth guy is still fooling with the 100yd target for some reason. No one is injured, but WOW! The new guy is really upset with himself and leaves. He absolutely was in the wrong, He cannot see the 100yd barrier and with all of the commotion from the group trying to tell each other how to "fix" the rifle, its easy to see how many mistakes took place that could have killed someone. Though I was in a position to see 100yd barrier, I was actually packing up my stuff and distracted by the chaos from the gun "gurus"

Too few "for profit" ranges are willing to eject and perma-ban people who can't/won't comply with the four universal safety rules.
Of course most ranges don't even post the four little rules. They either post no rules at all, or post so many (12-15) rules that the critical rules get lost (and therefore get ignored) among the "no food - no drinks - one shooter per station" rules.

My rule is:
You point your gun at me again, and I'm gonna point mine at you. Same rule when duck hunting

At Turcott, you have to read and initial each rule on a list that is several pages wrong. They throw in some trick rules so if they say a yes, they know you didn't read it. Everyone yells hot or cold before anyone wake downrange. People will jump your arse if you screw around.
Posted on 5/26/15 at 9:14 pm to Broke
I don't like them.
When we go shoot at my place, the rule is one loaded gun at a time. Can't have that at a public range.

It is a lot easier with people you know and grew up with. I know my buddies will never even come close to shooting me. We still always stand a couple of yards behind whoever is shooting.
Scariest thing that has happened with them is a hang fire, and the gun was still pointed downrange when it happened.
I only like to duck hunt with certain people also
