I beg to differ with you. Around 2001-2002, I read An article in Ls. Sportsman written by an LDWF biologist that flatly stated there were no such creatures in La. He made the statement that most of the sightings had come out of a beer can or whiskey bottle. I called his office and he never returned my call. His secretary said he was swamped with calls. LDWF has indeed denied the existence of Cougars, etc. don't know when and if they retracted.
I think you're talking about an article written about the existence, or lack there of, of black panthers. LDWF has never denied the existence of a mountain lions in Louisiana.

Don't have time to research it but I remember he stated that there were no big cats in the stafe and that fired me up because I had seen one just the hunting season before in Concordia Parish. It crossed a large power line Row about 150 yds from me . I had it in the cross hairs but did not and would shoot one. Don't remember the article saying anything about black. He did mention that he had inspected prints and they always turned into dog/coyote. If I get time on my computer tomorrow, I'll try to research LS archives, if they have any.

I can assure you there will be about 50 of them in the state around Dec. 20th. Specifically concentrated around the NOLA area.

It's not Louisiana, but just over the state line, I have a friend that lives in a remote area east of Carriere, MS. He has seen a large cat, and he mentioned it to a Mississippi wildlife agent that lives about half a mile down the road from him. The agent told him that he had seen it too, and thinks it is a mountain lion.
Apparently, Mississippi green jeans aren't taught how to lie like Louisiana ones. I know a few Mississippi wildlife agents that have admitted to me that they have seen....Black Panthers.

That picture isn't a panther, I am pretty sure, I think that is a leopard or maybe a jaguar.
you can see spots on the insides of its legs and under its chest, Panthers ( cougar, mountain lion) whatever you want to call them, don't have spots and the head is shaped very differently.
"Black Panther" is a generic name that gets used for any large, melanistic cat, most often leopards. As has been stated a million times on this board, there has never, in the history of humanity, EVER been a documented black mountain lion/cougar. They just don't exist. So, you're right that it's not one.
And yes, this same photo has been popping up for years with a different location each time. Same photo, probably originally from india or somewhere near.

The whole thing just makes me smile. My favorite part is this: let's just assume for the sake of fun that there was a black phase of the cougar. They would have to be less than 0.1 % of the population. Yet, just about every time a cougar is allegedly seen and reported on message boards in La, it's a black one. I just love people. Especially rednecks.

That looks just like one that attacked me at my deer lease. Luckily I got a picture off before I scared him away by shooting in the air...

I wouldn't say it's impossible that a black one could exist.
The Puma concolor genome says it is.

LINK A good friend of mine has spotted this on his property in the last couple of years. Watched it stalk and chase a rabbit into the thick woods by the river that runs through his 65 acres.

Tell him to take a picture with his foot in the frame.

Not saying your friend didn't see one, but what's more likely to be seen a big feral tom cat hunting or an endangered jaguarundi?

The pic is probably a hoax.
As pointed out there are no known black Cougars/ mountain lions. Cougars/mountain lions can and do likely range into Louisiana on occasion. But this is not relevant to a discussion of big black cat sightings.
The only thing relevant to big black cat rumors is the jaguar. The jaguar is a lone wanderer. It's historical range puts it easily in southern Louisiana. It's current range includes Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. All of which are documented by way of currently tagged and tracked Jaguars. It is thought that the Jaguars in Texas and Arizona (a specific area) are sustained by at least one breeding pair.
A few years ago one of those Jaguars, macho b was his name I think. Was trapped like 750 miles north of his current known range. And sent back.
It would not at all be impossible for a jaguar to be in Louisiana, which is most like their preferred habitat.
The jaguar in Louisiana could also be black. Yes.

what a buzzkill.
I have never seen a black cougar, but I have seen the ghost of Lucius Clay. It screamed like a lady.

That's a reverse brindle Cougar.

Mountain Lions are also protected in Louisiana, so don't shoot one.

It would be pretty cool to have them reintroduced. They certainly have existed in Louisiana, just nothing confirmed for over 130 years. Jaguars are phenomenal creatures. As far as cougars/mountain lions there has been a small and sparse population in the Pearl River system. They aren't black though.
