4x4 ATV vs. 4x2 ATV: UPDATE PAGE 2

Im looking to purchase a four wheeler. It will be used to get me to my duck blind, which would involve driving now very well kept levee (rice field levees, not like large river levee) roads. I will also use it to deer hunt in a couple reserves here in louisiana. After speaking to a lot of different people, they seem to be split on whether or not I should get a 4x4 or a 4x2. I feel like a 2wd will be fine, and so do the guys I duck and deer hunt with. However a lot of others seem to think getting 2wd four wheeler is useless. Whats is the great OD board's opinions on 4x4 vs 4x2? Please enlighten me.

Everyone's going to say 4x4, and I agree. My 4wd drive system was broken, speedo frocked up, and that's my pants and shoes on the back. Getting off to push is a bitch.

4x4, you'll regret not getting it when you will needed it, because eventually you will need it. Also, consider resale value, 2x4 ATVs are usually tougher to sell if you ever get rid of it.

4x4 and don't look back. Not much to wench too in a rice field if you get stuck. Plus, resale will be much better with 4x4.

What do the guys you hunt with own? Personally I wouldn't get a 2wd unless I was looking in the price range of models that don't offer 4wd.

Had a 4x2 big Bear and never got stuck anywhere the 4x4 didn't. I think it was the low gears and tires that made the difference.

If you hunt hill country a 2x is fine. I have both and use the 4x once a year MAYBEE.

One has a 4x4 and wishes he had a 4x2. The other has a 4x2. Most of the deer hunting will be sherburn, and a couple trips up to north LA. When taking my buddy's 4x4 bike in sherburn, we never put it in 4wd. Thats w two of us on it. We never got bogged in my other friend's 4x2 on the way to the duck blind.

Well it sounds like you may be fine with a 4x2. In my opinion, it depends on your personal preference and what type of ATV you have in mind. Using a new foot-shift Rancher as an example; the 4x2 is $4,597 and the 4x4 is $5,297. Personally, I would pay the $700 difference, because you would most likely get the $700 back if you decided to sell. Now the one case that I could see make sence is to purchase a Recon which is a 4x2 for $3,647. If I were to buy a 4x2, the Recon is the way I would go. It is smaller than a 4x2 Rancher and weighs about 140 lbs. less, which is a lot when bogged down without a winch.

I have a 4x4 rancher 420. Does everything I need it to do. Id rather have it and not need it or you gona end up like the other fella pushin your bike out w no clothes on

I would get a 4x4 but in saying that my favorite atv of all time was a 350 honda 4x2.

I have a 350 Rancher 4x2 and I am shocked at some of the places I've been with that thing. There have been a few times though where i wish i had a 4x4.
