I usually say the most exotic place I have ever visited. I always lie. It is none of their darn business from whence I came.

Born in New Orleans.
Lived in Atlanta.
Lived in Augusta.
Lived in Birmingham.
Lived in Auburn.

All before the age of 20.

Where am I from?

It's an issue because people ascribe a list of qualities and characteristics when you say where you are from.

I'm from New Orleans. So did I go through Katrina? No. Where's my accent? In a few words. You eat spicy food? Yeah is that New Orleans? You're an LSU Tiger fan? No. You ever get into voodoo? What the frick?

I thought all people from New Orleans could be defined by those things? Well, I moved from New Orleans when I was a kid. So you're not from New Orleans? Well, I am but I lived in August for a while. Oh, so you're from Augusta? Sort of, I also lived in Birmingham for high school. So you're from Birmingham?

You know what? frick off. Don't ask me where I'm from. I don't want to answer it.

Madisonville

You pick, but I take that as a question of where I went to high school (MHS)

It really depends on where I am when I'm asked.

If I'm out of state I'll say that I'm from New Orleans, because that is where I live and have lived for the past few years.

If I'm talking to someone in New Orleans, and they ask where I'm from I'll say that I'm from Lafayette, because I'm from an unincorporated area of Vermilion parish that no one would really know.

If I'm in the Lafayette area I typically say that I'm from "south of Lafayette", but live in New Orleans.

Depends on where I am at when the question is asked. If in Georgia, I will say the closest town to where I grew up because very few have even heard on the town I grew up in. If I am out of the state, I usually say about two hours east of Atlanta. If they ask where I live now, and are from Georgia, I will say the town. If they are from out of state, I will say two hours south of Atlanta.

I once asked a girl where she was from and her reply was "I was born in Vacherie". I asked where she lived now and she said "Lower Vacherie".

I know there is about a 5-10 mile difference in the two but come on.

I get the military brat having trouble but more than that I've noticed it is a hard question for many people to answer. As a side note many people pass off a load of crap in their response. My concern: 1) know where the hell you are from; 2) don't bullshite me on the answer. One more side note: and damn sure don't bullshite me about the high school you attended. That is all.
