Why is the question 'where are you from' difficult?

I get the military brat having trouble but more than that I've noticed it is a hard question for many people to answer. As a side note many people pass off a load of crap in their response. My concern: 1) know where the hell you are from; 2) don't bullshite me on the answer. One more side note: and damn sure don't bullshite me about the high school you attended. That is all.

That's an ethnic micro-aggression.

I'm triggered.

you want to know where I grew up or where I live?

I consider where I live to be where I'm from

I usually interpret this question as "Where did you spend your meaningful growing up years?" In order to avoid a long arse history. Like if you were born in London but lived there for 3 months until you moved to some shithole town in Mississippi, then a-hole you are from MS.

Who is asking, a coworker or someone you meet on vacation?

If someone asks that lives in teh same place as me, I'll say my hometown where I was born and raised (30 miles outside of atlanta). If I'm out of town and someone asks, I'll say where I currently live (Atlanta).

ETA: on a side note, for some reason it REALLY bothers me when people claim theyre from a major city when in reality they're from 30 minutes away. I get that they'll just say "oh, well you would have never heard of [wherever] so it's just easier". bullshite, that's not where you're from. To give a LA example, it'd be like someone saying they're form NO when they're really from destrehan.

Goddamn right. I ask someone this I want a one or two word answer MAXIMUM. When they start stammering and making shite up, that's when I start slapping the lies out of their mouth. I ain't got time for that bullshite.

"Where you from?"
"Where you live?"
"Where were you born and raised?"
"Where did you grow up?"

Can all be different answers sometimes

Want to know where I was born? Where I lived in childhood? Where I went to high school? College? Where I live now?

This.

Whenever anyone asks me, I'm from Baton Rouge.

Even though I lived a substantial part of my life elsewhere.

FIFY
"Where you stay at?"

However that only is a query regarding your residence.

To ask it as intended with regard to cultural sensitivity it would be: 'where you be from?'

Born in England and moved to MS when I was 3 or 4

I sometimes throw in that both of my parents are from Connecticut because it's pertinent to why I know that area so well now and then.

If you were born in Baton Rouge, but moved to Denham Springs when you were 3, you are from Denham Springs.
I hear so many people say "but I'm not FROM Denham Springs"

That's funny, I was being purely hypothetical and just made that up.

I have a hard time answering this question. By the time I was 11, I had lived in 5 different cities in 3 different states.

I am 42 now, and I have lived in 10 different cities in 7 different states.

I am not a military brat although my father was in the military when I was born but was discharged a few weeks later.

I have a hard time answering that, b.c what are the meaningful years? I went to high school in texass and usually say texass. But I don't have any family there any more, and I hated it.
